This is just a really short thing that I just came up with now. It is in the same series as 'She Knew'(set just before) but I'm not writing the fics in order so I'm posting them separately. As I'm only 14 I've never had a baby so I'm not exactly sure how it works but I did see my brother being born and have heard my mum talk about it so I have a fair idea.
Ami-Jayne
Everyone River had asked about it said it hurt but it doesn't, not really.
Not like the Academy hurt her.
There was pain, but pain is a natural part of childbirth, it didn't hurt.
She was half standing, half lying down with only Simon and Jayne in the room.
Simon was stooped over with his hands between her legs.
"The baby's crowning now I need you to push mei mei." So she does.
Jayne was standing next to her looking petrified, he's squeezing her hand harder than she's squeezing his but she doesn't mind, it's comforting.
She grunted as the next contraction hit and pushed.
"That's her head out, now I need you to give her one more push to get the shoulders out." Simon needn't have spoken because River was already pushing again.
The baby slid out into Simon's waiting hands, a red screaming mess, and River felt a wave of calm pass over her as she flopped back into her chair.
Simon wiped away most of the excess blood with a towel and placed the newborn girl in her mothers' arms.
Jayne looked like he was going to faint and River let go of his hand so she could properly hold their daughter.
"Hello Ami," River cooed, "welcome to Serenity."
Jayne tentatively reached out to touch the baby's head.
"I think she looks like a Jayne Junior," Jayne joked.
"Ami-Jayne" River replied simply.
The pain was worth it.
And now River hurt less.
