A/N: Just a little AU fic, written as Lorelai's wedding to Max. Mostly written as LL, but could possibly be Chris/Lor. I never identified the 'he', so if you want, you can imagine him as anyone you'd like.
Disclaimer: They're not mine… Because honestly, who writes the show better than Amy?
This story goes out to… (insert drum roll/helicopter noise here)... Charmedchic72! Thanks so much for your encouraging reviews! I know you'll be reviewing this!He told himself he wasn't going to go.
As he put on his suit, he kept telling himself this.
He wasn't going to go.
But despite the fact that his brain was telling him to stay home, he grabbed the tie that seemed to vaguely match his suit and hurriedly tied it around his neck as he rushed down the stairs.
The ceremony was starting soon.
As he dashed to the church, the phrase kept repeating itself.
He wasn't going to go.
Even as he took a seat in the back pew seconds before 'The Wedding March' began, he still kept mulling over that one sentence.
He wasn't going to go.
But there he was.
At Lorelai Gilmore's wedding.
The only reason he ignored the reverberating 'I'm not going to go' in his mind was because he thought that maybe, just maybe, if she saw him she'd know.
He never was one for words. And now he realized that being that way sucked.
He kept telling himself that he didn't care if she married that Max guy. He would make her happy, right? That was all that mattered, right?
But it wasn't.
And as she walked down the aisle, she spotted him. She smiled and walked on.
He nearly said something when he heard the well-known 'Speak now, or forever hold your peace.' But he held his tongue.
He couldn't screw this day up for her.
Silently, he sat as they exchanged vows and rings. He stared at his shoes as they kissed and avoided any eye contact with her as she walked back down the aisle, her fingers entwined with the schoolteacher's.
Of course, he attended the reception in the square. It was expected of all of the wedding guests. He spent the majority of the time picking at his chicken and watching Lorelai.
As the sky darkened, the crowd thinned a little as the families with kids left for home.
And still he sat, alone at his table, his food nearly intact.
He watched as Max became engulfed in discussion with Rory, leaving Lorelai to scan the reception area. When she spotted him, she gave a little half-smile and rose from her seat. She walked over to him and held her hand out, palm facing upwards. "Dance?" she asked, cocking her head slightly.
"Yeah," he replied, taking her hand as he stood.
He placed arm around her waist and her hand in his as they swayed to the music. And for a moment, he forgot where they were. He forgot what had happened. He forgot she was married. He pulled her just a little bit closer and she rested her head on his shoulder.
As the last bars of the song faded, she backed away. He kept a grip on her hand as he removed his arm from around her.
And as she moved to leave, he pulled her back to him and hugged her. "Congratulations." He whispered into her ear.
"Thanks." She whispered back.
When they parted, he gave her hand a gentle, parting squeeze as they went their separate ways.
The End
