Kyuuzo sometimes dreamed of falling. He wasn't sure if he was falling down or falling up, or if he was falling at all. He could be suspended in the air for all he knew, but he did not feel the rush of wind that should be felt when he was falling.

And he certainly didn't feel the adrenaline rise with him when he soared up. So really, he didn't know if he was going up or down. But other times, he felt someone urging him to soar up, gently encouraging him, luring him. Sometimes, Kyuuzo would be tempted to look down, but a voice would always tell him to never look down.

Kyuuzo didn't like his dreams.

Kambei, on the other hand, knew exactly what was going on in his dreams. He was being chased, but he didn't feel threatened. His heart wasn't pounding soundly against his chest, his breathing wasn't uneven and he was never sweaty. He was being chased, but he wasn't sure at all if he disliked it or not.

When he was being chased, he had the faint desire to turn around and do the chasing instead. But whenever he felt the need, a voice would always tell him to never look back.

Sometimes, when he woke up, the scar on his neck would very faintly ache.

Kyuuzo couldn't resist one day and asked Kambei, "Is there such a thing as falling up?"

Kambei smiled.

"It's called flying, Kyuuzo-dono."
