It was 12:00 a.m. and she could not go to sleep. She sat by her window and stared up at the full moon shining among the stars. If only I could live a peaceful life much like the moon, she thought. She led a cursed and tragic life, but few knew the details. She decided a midnight walk would be the cure for her temporary insomnia.
The wet street was cold to her bare feet so she tiptoed hurriedly across the street to the sidewalk. On the walks she often took, she always seemed vulnerable to going into a daydream, and while she was deep in thought, she failed to notice the sound of someone else's quiet footsteps on the pavement accompanying her own.
As she passed her old house, the one in which she had grown up for most of her childhood, she couldn't help looking into the frosted window with a lonely and sad expression. It was dark inside; nothing she could see was stirring. She continued walking until she began to notice the quiet footsteps behind her. "Haru?" She asked cautiously. "Yes?" He responded quietly. She turned around and saw his worried face staring back at her. "I broke up with you in the hospital. You can stop worrying about me, and for that matter, following me. I'm capable of taking care of myself," she told him sternly. He looked torn but talked in his usual calm manner, "We may not be going out anymore, but I still love you, and I will never let you out of my sight when you're alone." She looked at him desperately, but he stood his ground.
He gently put his jacket around her bare arms and embraced her in a gentle fashion, "You'll catch cold wearing that during a winter night." "You're not my boss," she responded stubbornly. He smiled kindly and explained to her that he didn't say it as an order. She laughed lightly but deep inside, her heart ached. He was the only one who cared about her, and that was the reason they couldn't be together.
Flashback
She couldn't help having flashbacks of the time that Akito found out about their relationship and pushed her out the window. Akito had told her he would not tolerate her behavior and had pushed her through a window, shards of glass digging into her back as she hit the ground. When she woke up, she was in the local hospital, the doctors asking what had happened.
She had to lie.
Haru would visit her every day, but she just pushed him away. "We can't be together, good bye," she had said to him. Her mind was made up, but her heart disagreed. The three months in the hospital had gone by slowly, with frequent visits of Hatori to check on how she was doing.
Present
She began to walk back to Kagura's house, Haru's jacket wrapped tightly around her to keep her warm from the whistling winds. Haru watched her go, feeling deep sympathy and sadness in his heart. "I love you Rin. I will always love you."
