She slumped against the back wall of the elevator. 'He can't?' she thought. 'He can't? He can't what? Can't stand to break his wife's heart, but he's perfectly fine with breaking mine?' Tears welled up in the corner of her eyes and slid down her cheeks. The elevator doors pinged shut, and she pushed the button for Lobby. She watched the numbers above the door illuminate as they hit each floor on the way down. She wiped her eyes as the elevator lurched to a stop. The doors slid open, and Meredith stepped out. She walked through the doors of Seattle Grace Hospital and to her car. Tears blinded her view as she fumbled through her purse for her keys. She approached her car and stuck the key in the keyhole. She turned it, and was about to pull the door open when a familiar hand covered hers. She looked to her right and there he was.
"I can't not be with you," he said. She pulled the key out and turned to face him.
"What did you say?" she asked. He wiped away the lone tear that lingered on her cheek.
"I can't not be with you Meredith. I can't stand to not be around you. I can't believe I ever second guessed my decision to leave her."
Her. The red haired, salmon scrub wearing 'it' that had ruined it all. Meredith looked up at him. "I… I don't know what to say."
"Don't say anything." He stroked her cheek with his hand and pulled her closer. She wrapped her arms around his neck letting her purse and keys fall onto the asphalt. She let herself fall into him, fall back into what was so right and so comfortable. He could taste the salt of her tears on her lips as he kissed her with enough passion to make her forget all the pain he had put her through.
