Like I Love You

By Lady Pyrefly

Author's Note: This story was inspired by one of my most favorite songs, "Maps," by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's been stuck in my head for a while now, and the song just screams "Selvine!" so I had to write this. Enjoi, okay?

"Wait!" Selphie panicked and stood up quickly, nearly falling over herself in the process. "Don't. They don't love you like I love you."

Irvine didn't stop.

"Wait!" she called again, "Will you just…will you just wait a second?"

He stopped. "Why?"

"Because they don't love you like I love you," Selphie repeated. "They don't."

The cowboy turned around. "What are you talking about?" he asked, placing his hat on his head.

Selphie sighed. This conversation was going nowhere. "They don't love you like I love you. They can't. They might love you more, and they probably love you better, but it's not the same."

"How is it not the same, Selphie?" How it stung her, the way Irvine never called her Sefie anymore.

Tears filled Selphie's eyes. She took a breath, and when the butterfly next spoke, her voice shook uncontrollably. "Because I loved you first."

Irvine looked down and grinned like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. Looking up, he shook his head and said, "See you later, beautiful." He walked hesitatingly backwards and out of the room. Selphie knew he was lying.

"They don't love you like I love you."
