Winry had never been one much for reading, not anything beyond repair manuals anyway. She didn't understand metaphor, had no use for the feel of parchment and book board between her fingers, preferring instead grease and metal and marred flesh. She wouldn't understand a literary allusion if it leapt off the page and drew out a schematic of itself out in three dimensions and five senses.

Sheska didn't understand machines. The pure logic of it, the inevitability of a particular chain of events playing out once one gear began to turn, the smell of a well-oiled joint - they all escaped her.

But she understood this inevitability, and she didn't need logic or prose or analogies to explain the simplicity of lips on lips, hands on another's hips. There was no higher order thinking required, no one half of the brain more important than the other.

Sheska tasted a bit of flour and apples when lips pressed poetically against hers and she could swear she heard a rusty gear begin its slow, creaky revolution.
