Hiei looked at the uninhabited village. Well almost uninhabited. There was one person left, Yuki. She looked up when he approached her.
"Hiei! I didn't expect to see you again. Why are you here?" the ice maiden asked.
"Not to see you. I came to see her." He nodded to the elegantly carved stone that marked his mother's grave, "it's called Mother's Day."
"what's that?" Yuki asked.
"a human holiday. To remember your mother. A friend told me about it." Hiei looked at the snow covered land then back to Yuki. She was smiling at him.
"What?" he said while looking away.
"you're more like Hina than you know." She left him then.
Hiei walked over and knelt beside his mother's grave. He ran his hand over the cold, hard stone.
"am I like you? I would think that Yukina would be, not me….she's beautiful, Yukina is. You would be proud of her. I am." He stopped then. He thought he felt someone's presence. He shook off the feeling and laid a rose on the ground.
"good bye 'kassen. Rest well." Hiei quickly left, but not before the wind carried his words to a young girl with crimson eyes.
Botan and the others had told Yukina all about mother's day and she decided that she should go home for a while and pay her respects. She never expected to see HIM there though. Yukina watched as Yuki left and Hiei walked over to a grave. She could barely hear his voice. She watched him lay a rose on the ground beside the grave. Then the wind picked up and brought with it hiei's farewell.
"good bye 'kassen. Rest well." And in the blink of an eye he was gone. Yukina walked over to the gravesite where hiei had been standing only a few seconds ago. Thoughts raced through her mind. Was it possible that her brother had been with her all along? But why wouldn't he tell her? He watched her cry and beg him to find her brother! Why would he lie?
"did I do something wrong? Is there a reason he won't tell me?" she muttered to herself.
"so you found out?" Yukina turned around at Yuki's voice. "Hiei is a complex person Yukina. He has very little self-confidence, though he does a good job at hiding that little fact. That's another trait he picked up from Hina." Yukina remained silent for a moment longer.
"what should I do?"
"Just let him know you care."
Yuki's words replayed themselves over and over in Yukina's mind as she prepared dinner.
"Yukina." She looked up at hiei who was seated in a chair and looking out the window.
"yes?"
"the waters boiling."
"Oh!" she turned down the heat and walked over to hiei. He didn't seem to notice until she wrapped her arms around him. "Thank you Hiei, for everything." She knew he felt uncomfortable so she let go and went back to cooking. She smiled to herself. She finally knew who her brother was. But she wouldn't tell. They would forever be a family in secret.
