Chapter 1
Mysterious Book
Kaoru sat on the steps of her dojo as she watched a cool fall's breeze blow through the trees.
"It's a beautiful day, that it is." Kenshin's voice came from behind her.
"Yes," she said as Kenshin moved to sit next to her. Nature's beauty soon brought the two to a comfortable silence, as they watched the leaves and sakura petals perform their elegant dance in the wind. The sun was shinning, without a cloud in the sky. It was a very peaceful day, a spot in paradise. Peace, tranquility, and love by your side. But unfortunately good things don't last forever. For it was then that Yahiko decided to walk by.
"Hey Ugly, are you gonna teach me or what!" Kaoru inwardly sighed at her loss of paradise.
"Stop calling me ugly, little brat!"
"Don't call me little!" Kaoru pulled out her bokken from nowhere and began chasing Yahiko around.
"At it again, hmm?" Sanosuke sat down next to an ever-smiling Kenshin.
Yahiko suddenly landed a face plant right in front of the two, with about five large bumps emitting from his head.
"That'll teach you to call me ugly!"
"Until he gets up, anyway," Sanosuke added. "Kenshin?"
His eyes had suddenly become very focused.
"It seems we have a visitor." He decided the ki seemed harmless enough and walked to the gate, followed by Kaoru and Sanosuke. Yahiko, who was still lying in the dirt, remained where he was.
"May I help you?" Kenshin asked, opening the gate. A tall man, dressed in a black European suit stood before him. The mysterious figure tipped his hat, asking, "Is this the home of miss Kamiya Kaoru?"
"I'm Kamiya Kaoru!" Kaoru called, running round the corner. Kenshin's eyes narrowed into amber slits. He didn't like the look of this man.
"Ah, Miss Kamiya. A pleasure to meet you," he said kissing her hand. Kaoru blushed and Kenshin glared harder.
"Easy boy, don't growl now," Sanosuke joked. Kenshin turned to glare at him, making Sanosuke back up a few steps.
"My name is Nicholas Medici. I encountered your father on a business trip before his death. He wanted you to have this." Nicholas handed Kaoru a strange, old book. It's old leather binding was peeling away and it smelled of the musty dampness of an old prison cell.
"What is it?" Kaoru asked, fingering it lightly, as if the book would fall apart at any moment.
"No one has really known for sure. Perhaps you will be the one to find out, eh my dear?"
"But where did my father get it?"
"You ask too many questions, Miss Kamiya. But you will see in time, of this... I am sure." And with that Nicholas Medici was gone. He seemed to have walked down the path away from the dojo, but then again, it was almost as if he had just vanished into thin air.
