PROLOGUE
Mark's POV
Mimi was the first to go. She had never been the same since the day we almost lost her. On that night her T-Cell count had reached its peak and after that, it seemed to keep dropping lower. And although Mimi had finally decided to give up her addiction to heroin, as hard as that was, we all knew that it was only a matter of time.
But in her last months, we were there for her. Roger had gotten a few gigs at the Life Café, and I had found a job with a station that would allow me more freedom in what I was filming...they actually aired my documentary.
I still remember…like it was yesterday. Me, Roger, Joanne, Maureen and Collins at the hospital all sitting around what was soon to be Mimi's deathbed. The room was filled with candles that we had lit; the smoke detector must have not been working.
Collins told Mimi that Angel would be waiting for her, and he told her to tell Angel that he missed her. Roger told Mimi to remember him by his song, and he played her one final song. He kept on playing even after she had taken her last breath and was gone. He kept playing even when Collins, Joanne and Maureen left. He just kept playing, even while trying to blink back the tears that were threatening to fall. He would have still been playing if I hadn't taken his guitar away from him. I had my camera with me…but I didn't record anything. My hands were shaking so much that the video wouldn't be clear anyway. I told Roger to cry and he refused, even though the tears were already falling. And so stayed with him as he cried into my shoulder. In that moment, standing there in that hospital room filled with candles, a quote I read somewhere before came into my mind,
A brief candle; both ends burning
An endless mile; a bus wheel turning
A friend to share the lonesome times
A handshake and a sip of wine
So say it loud and let it ring
We are all a part of everything
The future, present and the past
Fly on proud bird
You're free at last.
