Two-Bit put on his jacket; it was a bit chilly outside. He looked out the window to see Billy and Joe come walking up the street. Yesterday they had dared him, in front of all the kids in his neighborhood, to take something from the local candy store. Of course he had told them he would do it in a second, but he had never taken anything from a store before; he was only 8. Apprehension filled him as he stepped out of his house.

"Heya guys!" he yelled, filling his voice with fake cheerfulness.

"Hey Two-Bit, ready to go?" they asked smugly, their eyes

narrowing.

"Of course," Two-Bit smiled, "I'm always ready."

When they reached the candy shop, he watched as Billy walked around to the back of the store, out of the sales clerk's view. Once Billy was there he started stuffing his pockets with candy until they bulged. Two-Bit almost laughed at how obvious it was. He looked up to the counter and saw the sales clerk looking at him. There was no way he was going to get away with anything.

He watched Joe walk by another counter and slip two things into his pocket. Joe walked by again a few seconds later and took two more candies. This continued until there was almost no more of that candy left. Again Two-Bit suppressed a chuckle.

Now Billy and Joe were both throwing looks at him. They wanted him to take whatever he was going to take and get out of there. Two-Bit walked in plain view of the sales clerk and pretended to stumble on one of the cabinets, knocking a few things off onto the ground. "Oh," he said and started picking things up. As he was doing so he slipped one of the smaller candies up into the sleeve of his jacket.

Joe looked at him questioningly. Two-Bit nodded his head slightly toward the door. He finished picking up the spilled candy and started to leave. Just as they were about to leave the sales clerk came up behind them.

"Excuse me boys, but if you wouldn't mind, could you empty your pockets before you leave?" he asked

"We would mind," said Billy.

"Well then, I'll stop asking. Open and empty your pockets." Billy and Joe emptied their pockets slowly and carefully, as if hoping the sales clerk would change his mind. Soon the candy started falling out.

"What about you?" The sales clerk was looking at Two-Bit now.

"What about me?"

"Aren't you going to empty your pockets?"

"Well no, I wasn't, but if I must…." Two-Bit pulled his pockets inside out to show there was no candy.

"What?" Joe said, "You told us you'd taken some!"

"I never said anything," Two-bit said with a laugh.

"But, we dared you to!" Billy said

"Just…. stop by my house later, ok?"

"Nah, you meet us at the park at 5:00, ok? That way we can tell everyone you chickened out."

"If you say so. Bye guys," he called as he left the store.

When he was about a block away from the store he pulled out his piece of candy and looked at it. "That wasn't so hard after all."
