The Right Thing
By Neech
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha. He's just a character I like to torture every now and then.
For Deboo, who was the Obi-wan to my Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Tomboy, Poser and Confused Individual. Thank you for everything, for the student has finally surpassed the teacher.
You've always wondered, when faced with having to make a decision, whether you would do the right thing.
Kami knows your mother did a good job in bringing you up, for you've always had a clear distinction between black and white, good and bad.
Don't skip school. Study hard. Eat three meals a day. Always try your hardest at everything you do.
You never realised that there was a grey area, an in –between, until you met Inuyasha. Suddenly, you're skipping school, bringing strange boys back home, not coming home for days on end.
Brush your teeth twice a day. Look before you cross the road. Keep safe.
You've always been a good girl.
And now, you're not. Not anymore.
And yet, you still try, an imperfect person striving to live a normal, perfect life.
You've always asked yourself, what is the right thing, in your situation. You could stay in your own time, be a filial daughter and granddaughter. You stay, study, graduate, get a job and support your family.
You break Inuyasha's heart. You doom Miroku to a painful death and a life of suffering and regret. You fail Sango, your very best friend. You desert Shippou, the closest person you have to a son. You betray them all.
And what if you remain in the Sengoku Jidai? You defeat Naraku, avenge countless deaths of people who didn't deserve to die. Kikyou. Kohaku. You help save lives, you help people as a miko. You stay with Inuyasha.
You let your mother worry sick about your safety, that one day you'll come back a broken and battered body. Dead, because you're the only hope for a time you are not part of, but one that will influence yours in time to come.
To this day, you're still wondering what the right thing is.
The End
Author's note: This short ficlet was brought about by a bout of insanity while I was writing another fic. I'm not really used to Kagome's character, so pardon me if it's a little OOC.
