Kiss the Sky

Spoiler warnings: Avalon, Part 1
-------
I know that the radio is still workin', 'cause I can hear a voice tellin' me that SG-1 has done it. Anubis's forces are bein' brought down by the uncovered Ancient technology.
The voice says that it is a beautiful sight. I wish I could see it through my cracked F-302 canopy and the piles of snow that partially covered us when we crash-landed in the cold stuff.
We?
Banks.
He didn't answer me after we were hit the last time. I don't even know if he's alive.
I want to turn around to see him or to call out to him, but I can't summon the energy to do either.
Nothin' more worthless than a pilot on the ground – especially a dyin' pilot in a beat up bird.
Banks, we had some good time, buddy. Good times. God speed if I never get to see you again.
And Redmond. Ol' Red.
Shot down tryin' to cover my ass in this screwed up dogfight. I know you did your job . . . what you love to do, but I still can't believe you're gone with just a sprinkle of fire and metal scraps to show you were ever there.
Yeah, I got regrets.
Where are my guys -- my pilots? How many are still alive? I don't even know if any of 'em heard my mayday.
Family . . . Grandma.
And the biggest – that blue, blue sky I can barely make out from the snow and ice next to my face.
My first love, the sky. There was nothin' like taking a bird up and kissin' that blue sky and feelin' the power all around me.
I keep my eyes on the sky as the voice on the radio celebrates our victory over Anubis.
Too bad I can't be at the celebration party. I bet it's gonna be a party that people talk about for years.
I can feel the darkness comin'. This is dyin', I guess.
Come on Red . . . Banks. Let's . . . kiss that sky one last time.
END
