fanfic100 prompt: 002, Middle(s)
rating: g
ship: Well, this is set sometime in S2 or S3, and we're going by canon, so there is implied Bobby/Darcy I guess. -hides-
spoilers: General series. And a brief mention to The Sniper.
summary: Bobby's joking words come back to haunt him.
notes: There is an alternate ending. I liked it without, but then you know all I write is angst, but that's not everybody's cup of tea, so this way everybody could like this. I kinda think the alternate ending is cheesy, but we shall see.
This text is the newspaper article, because the spacing doesn't want to work for me.

It was a wednesday. Just like they had this discussion before, it was an ordinary wednesday. No new exciting cases. No current exciting cases. Today was going to be nothing more or nothing less than a very long day. When he came in that morning, that was what he was prepared for. However, as he made his way over to his desk and noticed the energy in the office was different. Quiet. Quiet was never good. He sat down in his chair and felt all eyes on him. He looked towards his desk and his face went white.
FBI Surveillance - Guilty Until Proven Innocent? By Darcy D'Angelo.
Wednesday's newspaper was in front of him, that being the blaring title above the fold. Darcy had always joked that the only reason she was putting up with him was an expose. He had played a long, and given her what he thought were 'mock' interviews. At that time it had been very cute. Now it was..a nightmare.
He read the article with his mouth open. The things she had said..this was beneath her. His Darcy wouldn't write or do this. When he got to the middle of the article, his stomach dropped. His name was mentioned.
Special Agent Bobby Manning gave me great insight while writing this article. As you can see by his next statement, surveillance really is dangerous and makes assumptions rather quickly. In one of my many interviews, I asked him what his favourite part of the investigation was. Simply put, he told me the middle. He told me the middle because it was dangerous and hectic and frustrating. That the bad cop interviews were more interesting and that there were so many leads to track down. The middle was where he could just run all over the city, doing what he wanted, how he wanted. He could but SOG, (Special Operations Group) on anybody he chooses, just to see if it may be pertinent to his investigation --
"I didn't say that!" he exploded. He didn't know what else to say. "I mean, I said some of it..but not like that.." This conversation had been over a candlelight feast with roses and dry red wine. He had told her about he loved that the middle of the investigation was the hardest part. That it was insane with all the leads they had to track down, the interviews..how it was so frustrating when the information didn't fit together..
Nobody said anything. The phone rang, and nobody rushed to answer. All attention was on him.
"I had no idea. Come on! Please, you can't honestly think that I would do something like this?" He turned to Jack. "Sparky, who stood behind you? Now you're not gonna do the same? Why don't you believe me?"
Jack's eyes hardened.
"Guilty until proven innocent."

-alternate ending-
Bobby went into shock.
"Don't you mean, innocent until proven guilty?"
Jack looked away.
"How can I fix this?"
Jack looked like he was attempted to say you can't but instead he laughed.
"Bobby, what day is it today?"
"Wednesday." he said slowly, and then looked at the date of the newspaper. "Oh ho. You went too far. I'm gonna get you back next time. When it's -your- birthday, you won't know what hit you. That wasn't funny!"
Everybody else finally cracked up, and Levi gave a happy woof and started to wag his tail. Bobby grinned and immediately started plotting his revenge.
