PROLOGUE: As it Stands
Meow.
There was a cat around here somewhere. Luke could hear it crying, further back in the alley between the theatre and Dinny's Rent-A-Pet. He took a small step into the entrance, pausing when he heard the crunch of glass. He looked up.
The lights that usually loomed above the alley were smashed out. Nothing new, really. Teenagers. Rocks. It could happen. Luke gave his foot a sharp shake, the pieces of glass tinkling to the ground.
"Here kitty, kitty, kitty."
A flash of yellow light shot through the darkness and Luke involuntarily jumped backwards a few steps. He shook his head slowly. Cat eyes. They reflect the light. He'd learned that just today in his Grade Two science class.
Meow.
Luke pursed his lips, and cupped his mouth with his hands to speak barely above a whisper.
"I'm coming kitty."
Just a few more steps now and he'd disappear into the darkness. Luke pressed a hand to the brick wall that made up one fourth of Dinny's. Something solid, something real, to focus on so he wouldn't let his imagination run away with him.
Luke felt a sense of urgency about the situation and, taking a few deep breaths, took his last steps. And disappeared into darkness.
