He remembers

He looked at the pictures and the notes and smiled at the memories he had from them, but it wasn't a smile full of happiness- it was a sad smile. A picture with him and the man he loved, standing in front of the school with his new class, a picture of the Genin-team he had trained, and many others that were too painful to watch and yet he couldn't stop looking at them- he had to remember everything that had happened over the last year. Somewhere in his mind, he cursed him for causing him so much pain, but in his heart he loved him and wondered how he could ever live on. He couldn't let go, not just yet.

Even the fire that burned in his apartment seemed sad and gloomy. Only two months ago they had been sitting in front of that fire talking and laughing and hugging. But now the fire seemed as empty as his heart felt. He walked towards it with a box full of these painful memories, throwing them in one by one. He occasionally looked at one with a sad smile on his lips, knowing he would never get the things he saw on them back. When he had almost emptied the box, he saw a picture.

It was him, a brown-haired man with a scar on his nose, standing next to him, a silver-haired man with a mask on. They were standing in their apartment together, celebrating. They had just moved in together. He remembered being so happy that day, it had felt as if something had exploded in his stomach. They would be together forever, he had said. He took the picture out of the box and laid it besides him on the floor, finishing the rest of the pictures and notes, sometimes wiping a tear off his face. He stopped when he held the last- a letter addressed to him. He glanced quickly at it.

"Umino Iruka, it is with grief that I inform you about the dea-" Iruka tossed it into the fire. Looking at that gave him the horrible feeling he had that day when reading it for the first time. It gave him back the emptiness, the loneliness and the sadness that overwhelmed him that day. He wouldn't believe it at first, but he had gone to the hospital only to find his body lying peacefully on a bed, a sheet covering him. He took the picture that was lying besides him and walked to his refrigerator, hanging it up using a little magnet.

He couldn't let go, not just yet. He wanted to remember.
