"Don't you think we've done enough for tonight, Joshua?" Artur asked.
"I think I've almost got the timing down. Just a few more." Joshua answered.
It was dark, as it often is in late evening. The rest of the group had settled around the campfire earlier, and now Lute was recasting Fire on it, reading a book on who knew what. She was most likely the last one up.
"Ready?" Artur called.
"Ready."
Artur flipped to the next page in his book of Lightning and set it down on the floor. He pressed his hands together in prayer, and muttered the incantation. The words glowed and faded on the page, which began to shrivel up. Artur opened his eyes and attacked Joshua.
Who did a strange movement like a dodge, but it didn't work- the spell hit him in the shoulder and knocked him off balance. He promptly fell down. They were very weak spells, but all the same, Artur hurried over and brandished the vulnerary at Joshua.
"No, no, I'm fine."
"Well, you've only dodged about three of the last twelve spells. There's got to be some damage. Or at least a bruise." Artur started poking at Joshua's shoulder in a very professional manner.
Joshua made a sort of grunting noise, and grabbed onto Artur's hand. Artur began to pull him up, but Joshua hooked his other arm around Artur's waist and got up himself. Artur swatted at the arm around his waist and returned to his starting position.
They continued practicing. Joshua was getting better, Artur had to admit.
"You know, I've heard that sometimes you can reflect a magic spell back at the caster." Joshua said, successfully dodging a spell. "With a blade, of course. Want to try it?"
Picking up his book, Artur nodded. "Alright." Artur flipped through his book, which now had a pathetic amount of pages. "By the way, you owe me a Lightning."
Joshua drew his blade. "I'll get you another one, don't you worry."
Artur began the incantation, and attacked Joshua. He parried the spell, which came back at Artur at a very high speed.
The reflected spell hit him in the shoulder, and Artur expected to crumble into a heap of robes. But Joshua practically flew to his side, wrapping one arm around Artur's waist and the other around his shoulders awkwardly. He really didn't need to be caught, but Joshua was suddenly behind him and caught him. Artur's head fell back, and they were staring into each other's eyes- if Joshua leaned down just a few inches... Artur seemed to have caught onto that concept, and his eyes were nervously flicking between Joshua's eyes and Joshua's lips. Joshua felt Artur's grip tighten on his shoulders. Artur began to lean up, ever so slightly, and the silence was deafening. Joshua dipped his head down slightly-
Suddenly, Artur pulled back, as if a thought had just struck him. "Why can't you use that speed when you're trying to dodge magic?"
Joshua rolled his eyes. "Artur?"
"Yes?"
"Be quiet."
And then they kissed.
