He stands alone upon the battlements and watches the sun dip into a restless sea. The adornments of his rank have been displaced; the east wind ruffles his shirtsleeves, sets the ends of his cravat to dancing. Unsteady fingers run through close-cropped hair and he marvels at the simple pleasure of it.

His mind is on the pirate who sailed into hard won freedom this day, and on words that the Lieutenant whispered as they watched the man swim toward his rescue. "I told you so."

Turning his back to the sea, he smiles.

"Indeed," is all that he says.
