Prologue

The day was May 22, 2005. It seemed like any other normal day in the beginning. But the history books shall forever know it as The Day of the Mutants.

Governments from all over the world had known about mutants. They had ever since that fateful day in Roswell, New Mexico. That was when the first mutant was discovered… though it was written off in the tabloids as the fictional ranting of a deranged old man, claiming to have seen aliens. Of course, in all truth, the general public had known about them as well. Every tabloid article about aliens, ghosts, zombies, and other supernatural beings were isolated mutant sightings that had been intercepted by the government.

But it was on this date that all the world would become fully aware of the truth: mutants existed. All because of one little machine… the Genome Enhancer. This machine used light waves to spread its effect all over the world in a manner of seconds. In the first wave it activated all X-Genes (the name for the gene in the DNA structure that separates mutants from humans and gives them their abilities) and then, in its second wave, enhanced the influence of all active X-Genes over the body so that the mutant's abilities would become undoubtedly noticeable. Thus, all mutants around the world were exposed for what they truly were. Though most surmise the machine was powered by a mutant, the biggest argument comes over whether or not the mutant supplied power to it willingly or by force.

Of course, as was expected, mutants were to humans like anything else. Being new and unknown, they were feared… and hated. There are little recorded accounts of the first mutant lynching. No one knows for sure how it was started, why, or by whom. And ironic as it is, with no names to match the bodies, no one can really be sure that it was a mutant that was killed… or just some innocent human the drunken bastards of the mod mistook for one. But the result was the same.

Mutants responded to the lynching with unbelievable speed, ferocious attitudes, and immeasurable power. The entire planet erupted into a full-out guerilla war of mutants against humans. Some mutants like Magneto and his Brotherhood urged the war on… holding the belief that mutants, the next evolution of man, were superior and that humans should be erased from the face of the Earth. Others, like Xavier and his X-Men, were more pacifistic in their views and kept a neutral stance in the war, attempting to resolve the issue peacefully so that mutants and humans could co-exist as one people.

The war raged on for twenty years, threatening the existence of humans. It wasn't until Magneto's death and the dispersion of the Brotherhood that the X-Men, with political backing, were able to bring an end to the war. And as they had always wanted, mutants and humans were living side-by-side in peace. New school courses, majors, programs, and colleges were created for mutants. New mutant sports leagues were brought to life. Special closed-gate ghettos were created for mutants whose physical attributions had been altered too much by their abilities for them to hide their abilities so that they could move out of the sewers. Numerous careers also developed for mutants, including in the armed services. After the war, the X-Men became a government-funded public defense program consisting solely of mutant soldiers.

Now you may be asking yourself, where do I fit into all of this? This is the year 2025, long after the beginning of the story. But I am not meant to be part of the beginning. Rather, I am the means to an end. I am Hodgepodge, grandson of Magneto. And I shall be the one to erase humankind from existence.
