In the Night

"Yuki?"

"Kyou!"

"What are you doing here?" Kyou snapped out, suprised.

"I think the question, is what are you doing here Kyou, this is my secret base." Yuki smirked, through he knew Kyou couldn't see him.

"I er, I was just, er..."

A light flashed across the two boys and Kyou caught a glimpse of Yuki's face, more shadows revealed than any real depth. He stopped speaking and linstened.

Crack. It wasn't loud, but apart from Yuki's and Kyou's breathing, it made a fierce roar to their ears.

"What was that?"

"Scared, cat?"

"No!" Kyou yelled.

There it was again. Crack. The light was waved, it was coming from deeper within the forest.

Frowning, Yuki stood in front of his vegetables protectively. Then he cast a suspicious eye over the rigid cat. "What are you doing here? It's late."

"I know, I was just," Kyou sucked in his breath, "Worried."

"You were worried? For me?" Yuki asked, before becoming silent and staring where he thought Kyou was. "I see. That's um, that's - "

"Shut up!"

"Stupid cat!" Yuki growled.

A great shadow passed across the secret base and Yuki and Kyou huddled together, eyes staring into the darkness, frightened of what was out there.

The light was back and was shining directly on the two Sohmas.

"Eeeeek!"

"What was that!"

"Tohru!"

"Yuki?"

"It is you, Tohru!"

"Kyou? Is that you? Is Yuki here too? I er, was hearing noises!"

The light flashed across the secret base again.

"So that was you, Tohru! The cat was about to climb a tree in fright." Yuki said softly, still unsure where Miss Tohru was but sure that she was near.

"What! Damn rat, twisting everything!"

"No! I didn't mean too, but I guess the batteries must be failing. I'm stupid! I should have replaced them sooner, I'm sorry Kyou, I'm sorry Yuki," Tohru murmured her apologies morosely.

Her finger brushed his and Yuki felt a smile creep across his face. His night vision had returned and Tohru could be briefly seen in the dim light. Taking her hand in his Yuki whispered, "It's fine Miss Tohru."

"Yeah, Tohru, everything is fine." Kyou butted in at his side, placing a hand on Yuki's waist, "Me and the cat on all right. The light was nothing."

Tohru reached out and grabbed Kyou's hand and then brought by Kyou's and Yuki's hands to her lips, kissing them gently, she beamed in the darkness. "I'm so glad."
