Chapter 1: Her Last Wish

THUD!

Suffice to say, the sudden appearance of a heavily-bound parcel, stamped and sealed with the Gringotts Coat of Arms, with an additional envelope nestled in the knots of the bindings, was not something that Filius Flitwick found himself unable to ignore.

And not just because of his goblin lineage either.

Instead, the reason he found his eyes…hell…his whole attention drawn to the sudden, unexpected delivery and the magic that had brought it not only to his chambers, but also managed to penetrate the Hogwarts defences, which had held off some of the worst magicks in history, was because of the soft, fluid-like style of script written on the envelope.

Script that spelled out just two words.

MASTER FILIUS

Throughout his long life of wonder, reputation and trials and tribulations, Filius had seen off many who dubbed him by that title.

However, there was only one person who wrote with such a graceful hand, not to mention looping her handwriting so much that it made the script look more like the work of an enchanted quill and not a human hand.

With trembling fingers, Filius reached for the envelope; as soon as his fingers touched it, as well as the seal that held it firmly against the package accompanying the envelope, the bonds snapped clean off, vanishing as quickly as they would have been forged. To Filius' awe, as well as disbelief and, he gladly admitted it, no small amount of sorrow, pain and mourning, the envelope rose into the air before it shifted its form and shape, to resemble that of a person's mouth, much like a Howler might do.

Seconds later, Filius' eyes brimmed with tears of awed loss and reminiscing as a voice he had not heard in going on thirteen years spoke from the letter's new shape.

"Hello Master,

If this parcel has been delivered, just one week shy of my special little boy's big day, then it means my worst fears have been confirmed and, despite all the trusts and hopes we had for him, Albus has obviously defied mine and James' wishes. Therefore, with the delivery of this gift, my final one to you, my dear friend, father figure and mentor, I now entrust my hopes unto you.

As you know from my last letter to you, dated just two short months before I dispatched this special delivery to your brothers and war-kin in the goblins for safekeeping, James and I have reason to suspect we are not long for this world. And, despite our fears of the unknown, I also know, with the trigger of this enchantment, that those fears have found their ground and we are no longer of this Earth.

Therefore, dear old friend and Master, I ask you…no…I beseech you to go straight to Number Four, Privet Drive, in the village of Little Whinging in Surrey; once there, you will find my son and, for the sakes of those living there, I pray those who reside there have treated him well…"

"Who could live there?" asked Filius, before he saw the envelope-mouth smile as the voice went on.

"Who could live there? You have probably just asked yourself; well, I'll tell you.

Number Four, Privet Drive, is the home of my magic-hating sister, Petunia Marie Dursley nee Evans, and her equally rhabdophobic husband, Vernon Richard Dursley. And, given this enchantment has not expired, suggesting my precious little boy is not only alive, but somewhere other than there, it tells me that my child is in her care.

And you KNOW, Master, how much James and I wanted nothing to do with Petunia; not after what she said at my parents' funerals."

Filius did know, but he still couldn't believe that Albus would ignore the wishes of two whom he himself, as Filius had done for the letter's sender-slash-creator, had thought of as the children, if not grandchildren he never had.

With eyes that burned with silent promises to help out in any way he could, Filius listened as the envelope-mouth continued…

"As I said before, the date of this parcel's delivery to you, and the enchantment on this letter, indicates that Harry is not only with my sister, but also about to receive his Hogwarts letter. If I know my sister and brother-in-law, and I am sorry to say I do, then I know they'll either lie to him, force him to refuse the letter or, worse, keep it from him and then take out their one-sided frustrations on an innocent little boy.

Therefore, Master Filius, I am begging you…call it my last wish…but I am BEGGING you to go to my sister's, find my boy, help him understand who he is and what he is going to become and, if you can, keep him safe…at least until he comes to Hogwarts.

Do this, my old friend, and you will ALWAYS be considered kin to me, as well as my baby.

A funny thing to write given I'm dead, I know, but I hope you get my point."

The tears rolling down his cheeks suggested that Filius did get the point.

And he also vowed he would not only oblige the letter's wish, but also honour the memory of his dearest student, fondest of friends and most-honoured of adoptive-slash-surrogate daughters.

As Filius went to prepare, however, he saw the letter go on.

"When you help him, offer him the parcel accompanying this letter; inside is everything I think he will need to know to help him prepare for the trials of Hogwarts life, as well as titbits provided by all whom I trust as fondly as I do you.

This brings me to something that you need to know, just in case the worst has happened.

People believe that Sirius is our Secret Keeper…THIS IS A LIE!

Peter Pettigrew, appropriately-nicknamed Wormtail by James, Sirius and Remus, is our REAL Secret Keeper and, if the worst has happened, it is highly likely that the old dog has chosen vengeance over duty. Either that or he was convinced to trust Albus as we were.

Either way, I hope this news reaches the right ears and, to prove it, this parcel also holds my final memory: a Pensieve memory of the Fidelius Charm being cast, by Albus, I don't hesitate to add, and anointing Pettigrew with the responsibility.

Seeing as how the worst has happened and I died, I hope you, my goblin mentor and friend, understand what MUST happen next.

And so, I leave the rest to you, to my beautiful boy, and the hands of the Powers.

Honour and wealth, always, old friend.

Love and Faith Always,

Your Apprentice

Your Surrogate Daughter

Your Friend, Now and Forevermore

Lily Alexandrea Potter nee Evans."

As the letter returned to its normal appearance, Filius' eyes burned again, this time with rage, as well as determination and disbelief, as he took in everything that the envelope had said, everything that, with her last wish, his dearest of human children had passed onto him.

And the responsibility, the burden, and the heavy task that he himself now had to undertake.

For starters, it was time to make right the biggest of wrongs.

The welfare of Harry James Potter…

AoD

When Filius appeared in an alleyway just off Number Four's location, his eyes narrowed suspiciously while the hairs on his neck prickled as he felt a great swell of pain, as well as hurt and wrath lining the street.

Dressed in a suit that wouldn't have looked out of place on an average, everyday sort of Muggle businessman – even one of his diminutive stature – Filius quickly left the alley and made his way along the road, following the stench of these negative feelings until, to his disbelief, he found the house in question.

What made him so disbelieving in feeling, however, was the fact that, even as he reached the end of the driveway, he felt his goblin-enhanced magic senses flaring up, reacting to the presence of something that even he knew was only permitted in special, extenuating circumstances.

And, suffice to say, a seemingly-ordinary, if not dull-and-drab-looking Muggle neighbourhood was not one of those circumstances, even if it was the current home address of Britain's magical saviour.

"Blood wards…" whispered Filius, carefully edging his way onto the property; when he felt those wards settle, he frowned, recognising them as some sort of weak, but still-empowered repulsor of Dark Magic and anyone who might want to come onto the premises and mean harm to those who lived inside – again, specifically, the sickeningly-named Boy-Who-Lived.

Worse-still, there was only one person whom Filius could think of, whom was responsible for taking such extreme measures and claiming it was all for…for…for the Greater Good.

"Albus, as a certain someone once said, you've got some explaining to do!" growled Filius, approaching the front door of the house.

As he did so, however, his eyes widened when, from just beyond the door, he heard a loud crash, followed by a way-too-loud voice, which roared like a dragon on rabies. "NO! I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU WANT, YOU LITTLE FREAK! STOP ASKING QUESTIONS! IT WAS NOTHING! NO, IT WAS NOT ADDRESSED TO YOU! IT WAS JUNK MAIL! GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD! STOP ASKING, I AM WARNING YOU: DO AS YOU ARE TOLD RIGHT NOW, OR ELSE!"

Given what he'd heard from the last letter from Lily, Filius didn't need any longer to figure out who was roaring, and at whom.

Drawing his wand, he quickly flicked it at the doorbell overhead, causing it to ring, which was the cue for loud, angry-sounding steps to approach the door before, to Filius' disgust, what could only be described as a cross between a blackberry, a walrus and a balloon on Thanksgiving peered through the door with feigned curiosity.

"Yes?" asked the fat thing, earning a scowl from Filius.

"Vernon Dursley?"

"Yes; what do you want…sir?"

Given how the fat man's piggy, narrowed eyes actually looked Filius up and down, noticing his smaller size and less-than-normal looks, Filius didn't need Legilimency to know that he'd wanted to say something else to Filius, most-likely to insult his appearance.

Unfortunately for the man, he'd identified himself as the reason – well, part of the reason – that Filius was going to do whatever it took to honour the last wish of his honorary daughter, and it all started with the Duelling Master, Charms Master and Head of Ravenclaw House's next question.

"Would you mind bringing your nephew, Harry James Potter, to the door? We have much to discuss and…"

The door slammed loudly, followed by Vernon's roar, "YOU! HOW DO THEY KNOW YOU'RE HERE? WHAT DID YOU DO, YOU FREAK?"

In the space of a few minutes, Filius decided he'd heard enough of that word.

With a flick of his wand, he opened the door, before, as he saw what lay beyond, his wand was in his hand even quicker than before.

"Expelliarmus, Incarceous, Oscausi!"

As the fact that Vernon Dursley soon became a trussed-up boar with no lips to scream through proved very quickly, one did not become a World Duel Champion and warrior-wizard by failing to cast spell chains in such rapid succession.

As the fat man wriggled like the world's ugliest worm, Filius glared at the smaller, but no-less-corpulent Muggle, who actually seemed to be holding a much thinner young boy, who wore nothing but rags that Filius wouldn't even use to mop up dragon shit in the tunnels of Gringotts, in his grip.

When he saw his Father go down, however, the boy backed away, screaming for Mummy, while the thin boy looked to Professor Flitwick with a mixture of awe, disbelief and even gratitude, all of which Filius returned in kindness as he smiled at the boy.

"Harry Potter, I presume?"

"Y…Y…Yes, s-s-s-sir…" gasped the thin boy, earning a slow nod from Filius, before he stepped into the house, closing the door behind him with a wave of his wand.

While Harry stared in disbelief, wonder and amazement, Filius cleared his throat before his eyes darkened when he saw an obscenely-thin woman with beyond-horse-like features in her bony structure, staring at him in abject disbelief, as well as horror and rage, the latter of which faded as she not only saw Vernon bound and helpless, but Filius tapping his wand against the rail of the banister up the stairs as he approached the boy and his…loving family.

"Hello again, Petunia Evans," said Filius coolly, indicating a stunned Harry as he glared daggers at the thin woman.

"I think it's time you had a chat with your nephew about who he really is…and, trust me, if you even think the word that your husband screamed like it was meant to mean something, you'll wish that someone else you knew and loathed as much as Lily did you had come to this house instead…"

In his own chambers in Hogwarts, Professor Severus Snape suddenly shivered in dread and ominous feelings of unease, which left his heart feeling cold in his chest.

Now, in any other circumstance, he might have blamed a Potter for these feelings.

But even as the thought rose to his mind and lips, he found himself banishing them, feeling that even thinking those things would cost him more than even someone like him could afford to lose.

AoD

"Wow! It…it looks so cool!"

As he heard Harry exclaim his awe and disbelief at the boy's first sight of Diagon Alley, Filius carefully took his young companion's hand as he told him, "And just wait until you get to school, Harry; now, there is a place filled with even more wonder than Diagon Alley. Now, come on, we've got quite a bit of work to do and not much time to do it in. So, stay close to me, understand?"

"Yes sir," said Harry.

AoD

As he led the boy into the Alley, Filius smiled thinly as he suspected that the boy's awe was also because of everything that they had learned back at Privet Drive.

From the true story of what had happened to Lily and James Potter – and it wasn't a car crash, as Filius had been enraged to learn, only to quell that rage for now, seeing as how he was there for his young ward – to the tale of Harry's fame in the magical world.

Filius also gave the boy an insight into his relationship with Lily, which led to Harry asking if the goblin-blooded teacher would call him by his first name since, in Harry's words, "You were my Mum's friend, Professor. I…I think I'd like to try and be yours, if you don't mind?"

Little did the boy know just how strongly Filius did not mind being called a friend and trusted ally of his once-prospective apprentice's only son.

When Filius then told Petunia Dursley of how this would be the last day that Harry would come back to Privet Drive, the goblin had seen a glint of hope and delight in Harry's eyes, while he saw fear and dread in Petunia, suggesting that his earlier guess surrounding the purpose of the blood wards was right on the money.

He also suspected that Petunia knew of the wards, but, like pretty much everything else, she had chosen not to tell Harry about them.

With that last bit, Harry was taken to Diagon Alley by Filius.

The Dursleys didn't even bother giving Harry a chance to say a final farewell.

The slam of the door saw to that.

AoD

2 Hours, 30 Minutes Later

"I…I'm rich?"

"You are one of, if not, quite possibly, the richest boy in the world right now, Harry, yes," said Filius, leading his charge out of the bank as he chuckled softly, "But don't go thinking you can just blow it all so soon; it might all belong to you, but that doesn't mean you can skint yourself in a matter of months…not that I think you even could, mind you."

"Oh, I…I wouldn't do that, Professor," argued Harry, clasping a brand-new key around his neck, which had been left on a silver string when the goblin who'd seen them – a battle-hardened, but honourable soul named Riptide, whom was, himself, an old friend and war-brother of Filius' – had needed to keep it safe for Harry.

The reason being, to Filius' outrage, that, according to records, Harry's current key was being held by Dumbledore, whom Riptide explained had claimed was his right by being the boy's magical guardian. So, the question of why there were no records of said guardianship in Lily's journals, or even in the records that Filius helped Harry ask for while they waited for the new key, was a question that Filius knew he would have answered sooner rather than later.

And woe betide Albus Dumbledore if the answer was not one that Filius liked, especially since Riptide had also agreed to take charge and full responsibility for this little misstep regarding his client's wealth and the security of it.

"I know," said Filius, silently thanking – and never repeating that thanks to anyone, least of all Harry himself – the Muggles for at least instilling a sense of responsibility with what he had in Harry. "I just wanted to make sure you understood what it meant to have everything at your fingertips; of course, as Brother Riptide said, you will have to wait until you're seventeen, when you come of age, before you can actually go digging into any more fortunes beyond your trust vault."

"Yes sir."

"And, remember, if you have any questions about it, or anything you need to know, my door will be open for you."

"Thank you, sir."

"You're welcome, youngling," replied Filius, before he cleared his throat as he added, "Now, pardon the scholar in me for asking you this, Harry, but seeing as how it's still only early, how about we start at the bookshop and then, we can move onto the rest of your school things? If you like, I will even allow you three books that aren't on your list, as a reward for being so responsible and good-hearted despite all that you've heard today."

Now, Harry was like a kid at Christmas as he ran ahead of Filius, heading for Flourish and Blotts, the location of which Filius had pointed out to him on the way to the bank.

As he followed, Filius chuckled softly.

"So much like Lily…"

AoD

Little did either wizard know, however, that, as Harry ran into the bookshop, he was also about to run through the gateways of destiny, which would lead him into a world filled with far greater wonders than any other in history.

And, come the end of it, Harry James Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived, would be able to claim that he understood the true meaning of the Hogwarts creed.

Draco…Dormiens…Nunquam…Titilandus…

Aka?

Never tickle a sleeping dragon!

Wow, talk about a VERY different start: Harry's learned the truth, gained a friend for life and now, apparently, he's about to walk through the doorway to his destiny, but what is this destiny and what secrets and surprises will it hold for him?

Also, can Filius rein in his rages enough to help deal with the injustices surrounding Harry's life and what explanations will a certain someone have to offer?

Next Chapter: In a seemingly-random corner of Flourish and Blotts, Harry finds his attention drawn to a seemingly-ordinary-looking book: uh-oh, this isn't a diary situation, is it? Hope not…
