Harry Potter sat in his room, looking back on his life. There were so many things he regretted, and they were spinning around and around in his head.
"Daddy," his 5 year-old daughter, Jenny, said, coming into the room. "Sing me a song."
"About what, sweetie?" he said, his long, prematurely gray hair in a ponytail. He ran a hand over his beard and straightened his glasses, looking at his little girl. She looked almost exactly like her mother, with bushy brown hair and over-sized front teeth. But she had his eyes. They were bright green, and they were always sparkling.
"How about when you and mommy were in school?" she said, jumping into his lap. He sighed.
"Sweetie, the only song that would describe that has words that you can't listen to," he said, hugging her.
"I won't tell mommy," she whined and shot him the perfect puppy dog eyes that Harry had taught her. He sighed again and smiled.
"Alright. Just don't tell mommy," he said, and started to sing, his voice rough, deep, and soothing.
"There was a time I tried to kill a man
Just for looking at me wrong
Anger so strong, I couldn't stop myself
I was killing myself one shot at a time
Going insane from the pain
The woman and the wine
But I finally hit bottom in an alleyway
Hell wasn't but a breath away
So I hit my knees in the street and begged God for mercy
Last night I told the devil where to go
You know heaven's got my soul
Ain't gonna listen to his lies no more
Last night I told the devil where to go."
Jenny's large eyes widened at the song.
"Daddy, were you aboosed?" she asked. Harry laughed at the mispronunciation, shook his head, and kept singing.
"I could've saved myself a lot of hurting time
If I'd have just listened to my momma
Every time she cried
But I was too lost in a sinners haze
Burning up the days
Just another young man who had lost his way
Now it finally make sense what the preacher said
When he said, son, you don't wanna wake up dead
And find yourself alone in the fires of Hell
Yeah, everybody
Last night I told the devil where to go
You know heaven's got my soul
Ain't gonna listen to his lies no more
Last night, I told the devil where to go
Now when you hear that demon knocking at your door
You just tell him, you don't want his kind round here no more
'Cause if you wanna love, if you wanna live
If you wanna be free you can't forget and forgive
You gotta kick him in the teeth and do exactly
Do exactly what I did, yeah
Last night, I told the devil where to go
You know heaven's got my soul
Ain't gonna listen to his lies no more
Last night, I told the devil where to go."
He finished his song and lookeddown at his small daughter, who was curled up on his lap and was looking at him through half-closed eyes.
"Daddy," she yawned. "Did you really tell the devil where to go?"
"No," he said. "But I told someone who is a LOT like the devil to go visit the devil."
"Oh," she said, and fell asleep. Just then, Hermione Potter came in.
"Harry, I heard you singing. Do you want me to put Jenny to bed?" she said.
"No," he said. "She saved me, just like you saved me from myself."
She smiled and shut the door as Harry lay down on his bed and, his daughter curled up into his arms, fell asleep, with his guardian angel, wife, and best friend Hermione, looking on, smiling.
