The door to the basement lab was securely locked. A "Warning, Genius at Work" sign hung outside. His phone was off the hook. There should be absolutely NO interruptions.
Gene splicing and mutation was careful work, as he well knew. One mistake, one slip-up, anything could make his work blow up in his face. From previous experiences, he made sure there was a fire extinguisher close at hand.
First the high powered microscope needed to be adjusted to the correct resolution. Next, a tiny sample from his subject had to be placed upon a slide. Holding his breath, he carefully used his scalpel to sliver off just the right amount. So far so good.
Checking and rechecking his figures, measuring and re-measuring his sample, it was several long minutes before he aligned the slide on the microscope. Too much or too little could throw the calculations off.
Now for the hypodermic needle. Ten milliliters from one vial, five from another, 15 from another. . . the formula needed to be exact. The work was fatiguing, but the end results would be worth it. He stepped back and took several calming breaths. His hands required steadiness for the following step.
Turning to the microscope, he lifted the needle. A precise amount of formula had to be injected into the sample. He found he was holding his breath as he carefully performed his task. Forcing himself to breathe, he continued.
The next part was critical. He had minutes to fire a concentrated laser at the tiny sample before the chemicals in the formula dissolved the sample. Too high intensity a laser would burn the sample to a crisp. Leave the laser on too long, and chemicals could react the wrong way. Thirty seconds at the precise level was all that was necessary.
Aiming the laser, he turned it and its timer on simultaneously.
Twenty-nine seconds. . .
Twenty-eight seconds. . .
Twenty-seven seconds. . .
Twenty-six seconds. . .
Twenty-five seconds. . .
Twenty-four seconds. . .
Twenty-three seconds. . .
Twenty-two seconds. . .
Twenty-one seconds. . .
He swallowed hard and resisted the urge to blink.
Ten seconds. . .
Nine . . .
Eight. . .
Seven. . .
Six. . .
His hand hovered anxiously over the off switch.
Five. . .
Four. . .
Three. . .
Two. . .
"DADDYYYYYYYYYYY!" He cringed at the ear piercing shriek. "FANG BROKE UP WITH ME AGAIIIIIIINNNNNN!"
"NOT NOW KITTEN! DADDY'S WORKING!" shouted Killer Moth in return. "SHIT!" he exclaimed as the precious sample burst into flame.
Swearing to himself, Killer Moth shut off the laser and reached for his fire extinguisher. "I have to be careful to finish experiments BEFORE Kitten gets home from school. . ."
