THE BATTLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOWER
By Longshot Mike
It was nearly sun-down. Roland Deschain and his gunslingers stood at the base of the Dark Tower and they read these words…
Dod-a-chuck, Dud-a-chee!
Your Ka-tet is the key.
Eddie, Jack, and Susanna
Are your entry fee
Susanna was the first to understand. Her hand automatically went for the sandal-wood revolver that hung at Eddie's waist.
Then came Jake. He drew on the man who was his father. Last was Eddie. He stood with no weapon with the exception of his his mind and his hands.
But Roland was quicker of hand, if not quicker of mind. He had out-drawn them all.
"Jake," said the Gunslinger with a tear in his eye. "Tell me one last time…"
Jake nodded, and did Roland this one last favor
"I do not aim with my hand," he said. "He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye." Jake paused. His chest heaved. He could not finish.
"I do not shoot with my hand," said Susanna, continuing when Jake had faltered. "He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind." Her face had become hot, and her eyes had become fierce.
"I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart," Eddie finished.
Then all together, having been Ka-tet and knowing each others minds, the four of them said:
"There are other worlds than these."
And I'll see you all there, Roland finished, silently to himself.
Then the shooting began.
