The salty sea breeze lifted tendrils of hair from shoulders as i stared out into the endless horizon from my seat on the theban shore. As i watched the sea's mysterious, swirling dance i was reminded of the life that recently been robbed of me. i remembered collecting shells with my mother, riding anaximander with my brothers and swiming in the sea with my closest friend, chryseis. Tears spilled dwon my cheeks as i came to terms with the fact that i would never again be able to enjoy such carefree pleasures. For as of tomorrow, i would no longer be Andromache, princess of thebes, but the property of hector, son of priam and heir to the throne of troy. I would be placed on a ship and sailed to troy, never again to see my familr, or my beloved home.I would waste away to a shell, become a ghost and be treated as a slave.
Through my tears, i let out a heart broken sigh, counting the amount of times i had begged my parents to reconsider, to let me stay, but no matter how many tears i had shed or how many times my brothers had raged, they had stood firm.
"she is too young! She is not ready to leave for troy!" Podes had yelled at my father.
"She is ready, and she will go to troy. This is for her own good podes," my father had clamly replied, as though they where discussing the weather and not the betrothel of his only daughter. removing these thoughts from my mind, i let my head fall back, relishing the feel of the wind in my hair.
taking a deep breath, i stood and walked over to my mount. His head perked up as though he had sensed my my approach. trotting up to me his hand went straight to my hand. Despite my sadness, i let out a laugh.
"sorry boy, i do not have any carrots on me, but i will make it up to you at home," i whispered to him, lovingly caressing his neck. Home. I choked back a sob as i thought of it. My only home now was troy.
mounting Anaximander, i took one last long look at the sea, knowing it would be my last.
