Three Hearts

---

Three bodies on the beach, sea waves lapping gently at their feet. The sky was still. There were no birds, no moving clouds, no sound. All seemed suspended in time. All but the sea and the breath of those on the sand were stilled. They were oblivious to all.

Three lost friends, holding hands.

"The road to dawn."

In his dark, he is running up stairs. Never ending stairs. He knows there is something at the top, and that he must reach it, but he cannot reach it. So much doubt resides within, yet he ignores it. The darkness devours each step behind him; he cannot turn back. If he could just make it to that door, if he could just see it, he knows things will make sense.

"Forgotten, but not lost."

In the light, he is asleep. There is much he must still do. Friends are in need of him. Him and the Keyblade. He is the hero and he has accepted that now. While the door has been closed, he belives in an old saying. "When one door closes, another one opens." He hopes to find his friends there, yet the thought of everything returning to normal is so far-fetched it pains him to think of it.

"I know you will!"

On the beach, she is alone. Left behind. No one believes her tales. They say grief turned her delusional, but she knows what she has seen. She knows they are out there somewhere. He promised he would return, and she knows he went to find their lost friend. She knows what both went through and blame neither for any misfortunes. She would only have them return home. She is alone.

Three lost hearts, holding on to hope.

Author's Notes: Inspired by a scene in the Kingdom Hearts 2 intro which shows Kairi, Sora, and Riku on the beach, asleep, holding hands. All of the italic quotes are las lines. Riku and Sora's from Chain of Memories, and Kairi's from Kingdom Hearts. All three lost their hearts at one point or another. Interesting...
