Sunsets and Jack Knives

I do not own the outsiders. S.E Hinton does. grr.

It was like any other day. Ponyboy was sitting in the lot thinking back on the incident that happened almost a year ago. Darry, Sodapop, and Steve were at work, Two-Bit was drunk somewhere, so what else could Pony do? He sighed, then he heard a voice behind him that made him jump. "What are you doin' all out here alone?"

Pony turned around, behind him was a girl with brown hair and looked neither grease or soc. She was clad in a nice pink T-shirt and blue jeans that had grass stains on them.

"What's it to you?" Pony snapped. Ever since Johnny and Dally died he had been a bit moody. "Just nosey. It runs in the family." she shrugged. Pony started to look to the ground, but saw something shining in her pocket. "What cha' got in your pocket there?"

"What's it to you?" she replied, mocking the way Pony had snapped at her.
Pony looked down again. She laughed. "It's nothing special really." She took a really nice looking jack knife out of her pocket. She then had Pony's attention. "What's your name by the way?" she asked. "Ponyboy." He sat and waited for the rude remarks about his name.

"Ponyboy, eh? That's cool. I think it's the best name I've heard. I'm a nuts about horses and things like that."

"Same here, one of my older brothers had a horse once. Well, it wasn't really his. It's name was Mickey Mouse and it was a mean horse, but it loved my brother. Then one day, Mickey Mouse got bought, and we haven't seen him since."

"I'm sorry.." she said. Pony then got enough courage to ask her something that had been bugging him. "Are you a grease or a soc?" he asked quickly. " She stared at him for a moment.

"Neither really. You could say I was born without the need-to-belong gene. Besides soc's and greaser's are labels, and labels are for soup cans, not people."

Pony looked up at the sky. The sun was starting to set. "Hey,shhh. Watch this."

They sat there together, staring at the sunset in awe.

"That was beautiful. I love sunsets." she said. Pony turned and looked at her, grinning. "Yeah, I dig sunsets too. She smiled then stood up. "Well, I better get going before my folks start worrying about me." Pony then realized that Darry and Soda were off work a probably worrying about him. He mentally kicked himself, why didn't he leave a note? "Yeah, I gotta go too."

"I hope to see and talk to you again sometime soon." she said, then started to walk off. "Hey wait!" Pony called out to her.

She turned around. "Yeah"
"What's your name?" he asked.

She smiled before saying, "Susan, Susan Hinton." And with that, she turned around, and walked home. Leaving Ponyboy staring after her.
