People always said the reason Roger went into Rehab was April.
"Anyone would change after a suicide that bad," they whispered.
Collins said it was Mark's doing.
"That boy," he declared, "is the sole reason why Roger's not out on the street whoring himself for his next hit."
Mark would tell anyone who'd listen that Roger quit on his own.
"One day he just came out of his room and said he was going to be gone for a while and could I please not hock the Fender?"
But Roger knew that it wasn't April, Mark, or his own willpower that got him through the tougher days of withdrawal.
It was Benny.
Benny who would make sure rent was paid so they weren't permanently kicked out of the apartment.
Benny who would cook breakfast and try not to care when nobody was there to eat it.
Benny who cared.
It was Benny who gave him the money for Rehab.
It was Benny who would check in on him everyday.
It was Benny who would try to make chocolate chip pancakes for him after a particularly bad night, just because he knew they were Roger's favorite.
That was why Roger still met with Benny even after the other's shunned him.
Even though sometimes Roger wasn't sure if he would rather punch Benny or kiss him.
Even though Benny was becoming addicted to Allison Gray, addicted to the power that she could offer him.
Because that's what it is, an addiction. Not love or companionship. Just a liking for power that was quickly swaying Benny from the ideals he once pursued.
Benny had once helped Roger get over his addiction. Now it was time to return the favor.
