Playground Pretend
"Will!" the older boy, however no more than eleven years old, huffed and crossing his arms. "You just ruined it! You're not suppose to be here! It's me and Liz and we're on the island!" Will sneered, slightly pouting, and walked back to the nearby swing set and swung to pass time. Liz bit her lower lip nervously, butterflies flying around in her stomach. Will. He was so cute. She'd had the biggest crush on him since first grade.
"Jack!" Liz protested. "Let's just change the scene! I'm bored and I want to play with Will, too!" Jack turned and glared at her. Of course, she was just a stupid ten year old. She would never understand the full complexity of pretending.
"Fine!" Jack growled. Liz smiled widely and screamed for Will to join them. Will grinned and quickly ran over.
"So, where are we now?" Will asked eagerly. "Can we go back to the duel?" Jack groaned.
"You want to go back in time! Sheesh! We're never going to get anywhere with this!"
"Yes, we will," Will argued. "I just want to duel!"
"You're on!" Jack laughed as he snatched a branch from under the nearest tree. Will's eyes flew open.
"Ah! You cheated!"
"Pirate," Jack said smugly and attempted to jab Will. Will only smiled back and began to block of Jack's moves. Liz sat down patiently in the grass. She loved to watch them play, they had so much fun. And Will would always want to do the exciting duels. He practiced about three hours a day, a routine that Jack would later in life tease him of.
Then, the bell would ring. The boys would drop their sticks and sigh, mournful that they would have to give up on their game. They would walk back in together, speaking of more ideas for the next part of their pirate adventure. Then, Will and Liz would wish Jack good luck as he returned to the hallway of his grade and they would return to theirs.
But as teenagers, the game would have came to an end. But in a way, their lives reflected the game. And Liz would sit in her bedroom, playing with the golden necklace Will gave her for her birthday, and wonder if they thought about the days they would pretend to be pirates in the Carribean on the playground.
