How Long Is Forever?

Disclaimer: The world will end before I own Harry Potter.

Summary: Remus Lupin thinks back on the time when the Marauders were still in school, and compares it to their lives now. One-Shot.

On the last day of school, I asked you, "We'll still be friends, right?"

And you said to me, "We'll be friends, Moony, forever."

So it seemed, for a time, to be true. We were still the best of friends, never to be seen without one another. There was no real difference from when we were in school. Then came the night. Halloween, 1981.Prongs was killed by Voldemort, and I could feel us drifting apart. We were never the same since.

Then Wormtail cornered you, in that muggle street, and you were jailed and taken to Azkaban. Wormtail was presumed dead by everyone. Then, we fell apart completely, Padfoot, all because of the work of a rat. Our rat. Wormtail.

We were reunited, briefly, in the year I taught at Hogwarts, and I was content. You were there, and everything was okay; I had you, and that was all I needed. But Fate is cruel. Just two years later, your cousin pushed you through the veil. That made two dead.

Now, I begin to wonder, How long is this forever you promised me? My life has fallen apart. I'm the only Marauder still left. Wormtail has turned tail and fled to seek refuge from Voldemort. You and Prongs have left me. I know that you'll always be in my heart, but am I still in yours? In Prongs'? Not in Wormtails, for sure. Once again, I wonder, How long is forever?

A/N: This idea came to me when I had just come back from a week of snowboarding. Ideas can spring up from the oddest places. Merry Christmas, everyone! (Throws confetti into the air)

I would like to hear your opinions of this, whether they're good or bad. And yes, I know, in the morning I'm gonna wake up and find a bunch of flames saying this story was crap. But anyways, REVIEW!
