At first it had seemed like a miracle for the former Flame Alchemist to see the former Fullmetal Alchemist in the flesh again rather than just a poor second-rate memory or photo. He just felt so relieved at finally knowing Ed was alright, that the past two years which had been a living nightmare of wondering were over, that he barely paid attention to the flying machines which were so dangerously close.

He couldn't help but notice the small changes that signified that Ed was no longer that too young boy of sixteen, if indeed there had been anything childish about him the last time they had said goodbye. Ed was clearly an adult now, and even in the middle of this battle Roy couldn't stop a slight shiver run through him at the thought. Finally, Ed could be his again. Just as he was supposed to be.

And damnit, he was so glad to see that Ed was still Ed, always quick to throw a comeback at him, and it felt i right /i , just him and Ed sniping at each other, with Al there to apologise for his brother's short temper.

But, as soon as he turned and saw that Ed was still standing there not moving, Roy knew. He knew Ed had to go once again, to put his own desires aside and do what he had to do. As he tried to hold back the crying younger Elric, Roy could dimly hear those words which Ed had spoken to him oh so long ago - that there was always something more important than selfish dreams, only Roy knew that this time the farewell would be permanent.

Never again would he see that cocky smile which burned him, never again would he hear that loud voice claiming that he wasn't too short, thank you very much, never again would he be able to tell Edward Elric just much he loved him.

And then he was gone.

Then what could Roy do but let Alphonse go too? Al had spent the past two years devoted to finding his beloved older brother, and the Elrics deserved to live out their lives together, they deserved the happiness which had eluded them for so long already.

Once again Roy was left with nothing but slowly fading memories and old torn photos.
