That voice still rang clearly in his head—cold, calculated, computer-generated. But the face that stared back at him was hers; her eyes saw right through him like a bug.
And closing at the sound of the zat gun that he fired.
That sight kept restoring itself every time he closed his eyes. And it seemed to have taken a life of its own, waylaying him every time she passes by; making his feet move towards the opposite direction.
Guilt has a tendency to rip your guts apart when it stares you right in the face.
"Sir?" That voice. Her voice. Fresh. Melodically human. Full of concern. She'd seen him walk away.
"Yes, Major."
"Are you alright sir?"
"I'm fine, Carter."
He tried to sound sure of himself. With a shrug, he tried to move away without having to look back.
He failed in both attempts.
