"Well, it's your birthday, Bridge! Any special birthday wishes?"
That was what he said every year. Bridget always would wish for something silly, like a really big chocolate cake, or a new stuffed animal, but as the years passed, she began to wonder what it was that she really wanted.
Yet, she wouldn't have this kind of friendship forever, she knew that. It was in The Rules. "Seraph…" Seraph's eyes widened, willing and eager to grant her silliest whim. Bridget sighed and smiled a lonely smile, "I wish I had a pink, stuffed elephant."
"All right!" he shouted happily, letting sparks fly from his wand, a large pink elephant appearing before her on her bed. She smiled sadly and picked it up. Seraph, however, being the clever devil that he was, noticed the gloominess in the room, and resolved to eradicate it.
"Gee, thanks, Seraph." She whispered, hugging the doll to her, "It's really cute."
Seraph sat down beside her, something he didn't usually do, often preferring to float about in the air. "Bridge?" he asked slowly and cautiously, "Bridget?" Looking up, and put on a fake smiled and nodded. "Bridget, is there something wrong?"
"No, there's nothing wrong, Seraph, don't worry about it." She whispered.
"It looks like there is something wrong, Bridge." He said slowly. She turned away, and he put his hand on her shoulder. "Bridge… you're crying."
Bridget quickly wiped away her tears and held the elephant closer. "No I'm not…" she sighed, feeling the burn of the tears as they rolled down her face. She was fourteen and crying, a fairy sitting next to her.
Seraph looked away from her, sensing her embarrassment. "It says in The Rules that I'm supposed to keep you from being sad. It doesn't look like I'm doing my job, though." He whispered.
"I know, don't you think you've told me a thousand times already?" she moaned.
"Please don't make me the enemy here, Bridget… I just wanted you to have a good birthday!" he whimpered, edging away from her. Seeing the confusion on his face, she reached out to touch his hand.
"Seraph, I'm sorry." She whispered, "It's just, we've been together for over six years now, and I'm scared of losing you…" Seraph nervously moved his hand away and tried to scoot over further, but he had reached the edge of her bed.
"Bridget, what are you…?" he stammered, but she cut him off.
"Please, don't you understand, Seraph? We've been friends for so long! I want to be more than just that!" she cried out.
Seraph stood up and backed away from her bed slowly, shaking his head. "Bridget, I'm your fairy godparent, I'm not supposed to be that close to you!" The girl stood up as well, and Seraph finally cried out, "I'm supposed to be like a father to you!" Bridget stopped dead in her tracks, the fairy's tears were plain as day.
"Don't you see?" he asked quietly, "Don't you understand? It is the one wish that I cannot grant you… I'm sorry." Bridget's face first expressed shock, then anguish, and finally, frustration and anger.
"You're the only one I have!" she cried out, "I don't have any friends, not one boyfriend in my whole life, and my parents don't even know I live here!" Seraph began to reach out towards her, but she smacked his hand away. "No, don't try to coddle up to me!"
"Bridget, you don't understand…" he began sadly.
"No!" she yelled, "Don't make me fall in love with you even more!" Seraph's eyes widened, and he shrunk away even further. "Sometimes… sometimes…" she whimpered, "I wish you would just disappear!"
With a bow of his head, Seraph avoided her eye contact. Bridget ran from the room, crying. Holding his wand up, Seraph sighed and swung it down. Barely audible, as he vanished into darkness, were three words… "So do I."
