Title: Family

Summary: She is the only family he has left.

Word Count: 400

Rating: PG-13

Warning: Contains incest and character death, as well as bits of angst and some minor spoilers for books one and two. If that sort of thing bothers/disturbs you, then obviously do not read the fic. This is also an AU ficlet..so. Just letting you know.

Notes: I got this little plot bunny after seeing A Series of Unfortunate Events. And of course I couldn't resist not writing it. This is told from Klaus' POV..sort of.

This also happens to be my first ASOUE fic..here's hoping that it's not terrible.

Disclaimer: A Series of Unfortunate Events is not mine; it's all Lemony Snicket's. Only the fic is mine.

Dedication: This goes out to Facade for always encouraging me and just being an awesome friend. She also got me to love VK, so this is my way of saying thank you to her...for everything. I highly doubt she'll see this, but oh well.

She is the only family that he has left.

Everyone else is gone.

Sunny's dead, and now the two of them are alone. He has her, she has him. Only they can be each other's comfort and strength. Like broken fragments of what had been a strong, supporting family - they must now pick up the pieces and move on, trying to heal from the emptiness that resides permanently in their hearts.

Count Olaf has half succeeded, he thinks with a wry smile. One is gone, now two are left, ready to be knocked down. The both of them will go on living still - the count has only through his feeble attempts made their resolve even stronger. She is all he has left and he would rather die than lose her.

She has kept him sane and given him back the will to live after he's lost it many times. Together they are strong, without each other they are weak. One cannot work without the other - either they live together, or die pitilessly alone. Without her inventions and plans and his knowledge and logic, he doubts they'd even be breathing right now. They keep on living for each other. For without her, he knows, he would be alone. And he can't be alone - otherwise how would he survive?

(She can't be his strength all the time, he knows.)

He's her rock for her to anchor on - unwavering, always there. She depends on him like he does on her. He is her light, shining for her in total darkness. He encourages her when there are failures. Whenever she needs him, he's always there, ready to listen and help. And whenever he loses sight of where he's going or what he's doing, she helps guide him back onto his path, out of the darkness and into the light.

They have gone through so much together. For being "only" fourteen and twelve, they have survived almost being killed, a rather not marvelous marriage - he stops himself abruptly. They've gone too far, crosses the invisible forbidden line, they can't go on any further.

- But they do.

They do go on further, and he realizes that he doesn't care anymore, as long as he has her and she has him and they are together - she's no longer just his sister.

She is his truth, strength, hope - and he can't live without her.

(because Baudelaires stick together)
