The Moment Kaylee Lost Her Smile
It had started out as a perfectly ordinary day.
Kaylee had woken up safe in her husbands surprisingly strong arms.
Her morning had been spent playing with the kids and making sure all of Serenity's parts were still running smoothly, nothing unusual.
After River had landed them on Marsden, a small little rim moon, she'd helped Mal, Jayne, River and Inara prepare for a job, they'd left at nightfall.
She'd sent Zoe her weekly wave then got the kids ready for bed and tucked them in, with help from Simon.
That's when things started to get interesting.
She and Simon were having a little 'grown up time' when the ship got boarded, obviously the deal ad gone south…again.
She pressed the auto lock on the kids' shuttle even before seeing Mal, Jayne and Inara being led into the cargo bay at gun point.
River wasn't with them so they almost certainly had some brilliant plan running; there was nothing to worry about.
There was some gun pointing and harsh words exchanged but no one was moving and nothing dire was happening.
Suddenly a small voice spoke up from behind her.
"Mama, I can't get in na the shuttle."
Then there was a single shop and Kaylee spun around to see her little boy crumple to the ground.
The smile she had been wearing all day faded from her face.
Samuel Tam was only five years old when that bullet went through his brain and at that moment part of him mother died with him.
