A/N: Here's another G/C one-shot. It's a song fic. The lyrics are from 'Outside Chance' written by Warren Zevon. Interestingly enough, I heard this song for the first time on CSI. Although in 'Grave Danger' the words were used in a much more literal sense.
And to CSI Battosai: I'm so glad you enjoyed 'Less Than He Wants'. Your kind words were great!

You can try to please me
But it won't be easy
--
Catherine, unbeknownst to Gil, was always trying to please him. He never caught on, though, because she did it in a teasing way, with jokes and sarcasm.
All she wanted from him was a smile. All she wanted to do was show him a world where there was love and happiness, where people showed emotion.
--
Stone walls surround me
--
Gil Grissom had built a wall around his heart. And as time went by, slowly, it grew.
One tier at a time.
Soon enough, he was concealed completely. The scientist in him told him that this was the logical choice. "If no one can get in, then no one can destroy you," it told him. "If you don't let your guard down, you don't lose."
The realist in him disagreed. The realist in him knew that he was destroying himself.
--
I'm surprised you even found me
--
At a moment he couldn't put his finger on, Catherine had burrowed in just a little. She'd cracked the barrier he'd created.
Somehow, subconsciously, he'd let himself do what he'd sworn he never would.
He'd let himself fall in love.
--
And you don't stand an outside chance
And you don't stand an outside chance
And you don't stand an outside chance
--
Somewhere inside of her, Catherine knew that she'd probably never make it through. She knew that there was no way she was getting in unless he let himself go and opened up to her; fully and completely.
--
But you can try
--
Even though she knew it was in vain, she continued to pound on the wall he'd made. She let the logical voice inside of her be drowned out by the foolish belief that if she was determined enough, if she hit hard enough, maybe, just maybe, she could break through.
--
I know you think you can get me
I'm only flesh and bone
--
Catherine reasoned that Gil was only human. So somewhere, shrouded in the entomology and crossword puzzles and Shakespeare and classical music, there was a man who wanted – needed – love.
Right?
--
But you may as well forget me
Because my heart is made of stone
You better leave me alone
--
Gil made sure that the world saw his heart as impenetrable. He tried to make himself believe that, too.
But he knew it wasn't true.
He knew that if Catherine continued the way she was, eventually, she'd get in.
One way or another.
--
And you don't stand an outside chance
And you don't stand an outside chance
And you don't stand an outside chance
--
Everyone he knew saw the emotionless Grissom. The one who was a robot, the one who didn't feel anything, the one who didn't need human contact.
He had them all convinced that they didn't stand an outside chance with him.
--
But you can try
--
Catherine was the only one stubborn – desperate? – enough to attempt it.
