CHANCES
by Occhio di Lince
"James, you have to go. Now."
James turned to look at her, his eyes pleading with her. "C'mon, Lil."
"James— "
"What?" he asked harshly.
"It won't work out. You know it, and I know it," Lily said coldly.
"Let's just give it another chance. One more time, that's all I'm asking for."
"It's always one more chance with you, isn't it? Don't you think you've run out of chances by now?" She retorted, raising her eyebrows. "I think we've tried enough."
He grinned mischievously. "I'll never run out of chances with you, will I?"
"James… you have run out. I'm not giving you anymore chances. You have to stop asking… and just leave."
"I have no where to go!"
"Go back to the flat," Lily said.
"But—it's not the same without you there! It's all quiet… and stuffy… and lonely!"
She glared at him warningly. "James…"
He knew that tone, knew not to mess with Lily when she began using that tone. But… hell, one more time wouldn't hurt, right?
"What about Harry? You can't make me leave him! "
"You have to."
"He needs his father! All little boys need a dad around!" James looked at Harry, who was sleeping peacefully, with a forlorn look on his face.
She glared once more at him, but after a moment the expression on her face softened. "Fine… I'll give you one more chance. But if it doesn't work out this time, you have to leave!"
James smirked at her. "It'll work. I know it will." He backed up into the corner of her room, and pulled his Invisibility Cloak out of his bag.
"Night, Lil. Good night, Harry. I love you," he said, pulling the cloak over himself.
At that moment, the door opened and the Healer's assistant walked in. She looked around the room, and chuckled.
"I see you've finally gotten your husband to leave, Mrs. Potter."
Lily smiled at her.
"All these new fathers—they're so clingy!" the assisstant exclaimed as she tidied up the tray by Lily's bed.
"Yes, they definitely are," Lily responded, glancing over to the corner of the room with a smirk on her face, twirling a strand of Harry's dark brown hair around her finger.
