Tatiana Vasilis relaxed, listening to the sound of the water fountains that gave the room its name. She was sitting cross-legged, the bottoms of her feet resting sole-upwards on the top of her thighs, in the traditional Zabraki style of meditation. Clearing her mind, Tatiana pushed aside all thoughts of the mission to Bothawui that she and her master had returned from the previous day.
It
had been a successful mission, talking to an insurgent force that had
threatened to take over the planet's capital city by force. Tatiana
was proud of how she and her master had managed to open and
complete
negotiations between the Bothawui government and the insurgents. In
reality, all the insurgents had wanted was reassurance that the
government was still functioning properly, something the Bothan
government was all too ready to prove.
Tatiana realized that she had not cleared her mind, and with a deep sigh began the excercise once more. This time, it worked. She fell to her inner core, her connection with the living Force and allowed herself to sink into it. Through the Force, she felt the life forms in the room- from the microscopic bacterium in the water to the different plants to the other Jedi and a few younglings who were out of her view.
As she recognized the presence of her Falleen master, Xenophon, his footsteps softly crushed the gravel on the path that led to the grassy area where she was sitting. Reluctantly, Tatiana came back to herself and stood up, brushing off the dirt which had clung to her tunic. She picked up her robe and put it on before walking to meet her waiting master.
"Still thinking about the Bothawui mission, Tatiana?" Xenophon asked her as she reached his side.
"Yes, Master," Tatiana replied. "I can't believe how easily it was resolved-"
"Easily?"
Xenophon demanded sharply. "Never describe a mission as
easy.
You must understand the complexity in every situation, no matter how
simply it may be resolved or diffused." They strolled down the
gravel path towards the exit of the room, Xenophon towering over his
young apprentice.
"I
understand how the matter was resolved, Master, and I know how
high
the tensions were, but still-"
Xenophon
raised a hand, cutting her off. "Tatiana, you see
this
fountain?"
he asked her, nodding towards a simple basin which sprayed a geyser
of water into the air. Tatiana nodded. "It is very simple
compared to that fountain over there, is it not?"
Tatiana looked at the tiered waterfall to which he was referring. "Yes, Master."
"But they both affect their surroundings, do they not?" Tatiana nodded, and Xenophon continued. "Without one, the other would be too prominent, and the room would lose the extra music which the missing fountain provides. They balance each other, and when a problem occurs which prevents the fountain from functioning properly, the balance is lost, although not permanently. It is like the different problems in the galaxy. The Bothawui mission may have seemed small and unimportant, but Bothawui lies near an important trade route, and unrest on the planet could have sparked a conflict on a much larger scale. Do you understand?"
Tatiana nodded. "Yes, Master."
"You
must remember to sense the bigger picture, Tatiana. You must
use
the Force to sense the possible outcomes and their importance in the
balance of the Galaxy," Xenophon said, and then continued
walking.
As they drew closer to the exit, Xenophon looked at a chronometer next to the pathway. In a lighter, much less solemn voice, he said, "Shall we get some victuals to eat?"
Tatiana grinned. "Of course. A hungry Jedi could upset the balance within the Temple!"
Xenophon
laughed as they walked out the exit. "Lead the way,
Tatiana.
I'd be lost without you!"
