"Rose?" The Doctor sat up in his bed. The TARDIS felt odd. Everything was still. The Doctor was used to the regular throbbing of the wires and pipes but he couldn't sense it. He heard a scream. He shot up out of bed and ran out the door, pausing only to pick up a knife. He heard the scuffling of feet. Someone had got into the TARDIS.
That thought was more chilling to the Doctor than anything else. It was like someone standing on his grave. He crept quietly to Roses room and opened the door.
"Doctor!" rose screamed as she dived for her bed covers. The Doctor turned his head to look away from her naked body.
"Sorry!"
"Ever heard of knocking?"
"Sorry, Sorry. I just… Sorry."
He closed the door and cringed. He walked to the kitchen and switched on the kettle. That dream.
He knew it was a predictive dream but he still hated it. It was a piece of the future he couldn't change. The Time Lords were able to sense the future and he was still a Time Lord.
He thought of all of his previous companions. All of them, except his grand-daughter Susan of course, seemed so unimportant compared to Rose. He didn't know what it was but there was something special about her. He couldn't bear the thought of her being killed, let alone on his ship. He knew how he felt for her, and how she felt for him but he could do nothing about it. If they did give into their feelings for one another, he would be stuck with her until she died. And he had many centuries to live after that. She would see herself grow old and he would remain almost unchanged. She deserved more than that.
He put the frying pan on and a bit of oil.
He'd made a promise didn't he? He said that he'd never let Rose get hurt. He cursed himself. Cursed himself because he was a Time Lord. Cursed because she was human.
Sometime in the future, Rose would die in the TARDIS. The Doctor could do nothing about it.
He couldn't help it. A tear of frustration leaked from his eye and into the pan and he banged his head onto the worktop. The tears wouldn't stop.
Rose put a hand on his back. He jumped,
"You startled me." He said.
"Well you startled me, Doctor. What's wrong? I saw your face when you came in. you looked scared."
How could he tell her? He suddenly realised that he'd told Rose practically nothing about himself and his past. She must really trust him. That's what hurt him the most.
"I just had a dream." He said, "Nothing anyone can do."
