Chapter 1

Cannon Cookies.

That's the name of Louisville's best cookie factory, and believe me, there are lots of cookie factories in Louisville. We practically have a cookie industry! Alex Cannon was the genius who owned and managed Cannon Cookies. Alex never came out, though, so how were we supposed to know she was a girl?

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, so I'd better explain. My name is Eddy McClaine. No, believe it or not, my first name is not really Edward. It's just...Eddy. Cannon Cookies hasn't been around that long. See, I'm nineteen, so that makes the factory about...three years old? And Alex was only sixteen when she started up the factory. She wasn't from around these parts, so basically no one knew her. And guess what? I didn't even care. I just liked the cookies.

Now, let the story begin!

"Yo, Eddy! Let's go to Lithgow's and get some Cannons and maybe a few sodas," my best friend Rob said. "Waaaait, I'm reading the paper!" I insisted, my eyes skimming over the page. "Oh. My. Gosh. Rooob! Look at this!" Rob came over and peeked over my shoulder. "Whoa, man. This is weird."

"Hello. My name is Alex Cannon, and I'm the owner of Cannon Cookies. I thank you guys, all of you, for buying my many different flavors of cookies! You all know about my little factory here in Louisville?-" Little factory was an understatement. It was a huge place, but no one ever went in. "I have now decided that I will hide a cardboard cookie in five of my bags of candy. So five lucky people will come visit my factory! All of the details are on the back of the cookies. -Alex Cannon"

"Rob. If we don't win one of those cookies, I'm going to die."

Rob and I walked inside of Lithgow's (the local coffee house) and saw Manny, the usual cashier. Rob told him, "Hey, Manny, get us two sodas and four bags of double-fudge peanut butter coated Cannons, alright?" "Yeah, whatever." Manny slid the shiny purple bags and two Fizziez across the counter.

I eagerly tore open a bag of cookies, while Rob did the same. His hand lingered at the bottom of the bag for a few seconds, and his brown eyes widened. With a shaking hand, he slowly showed me a bent drawing of a chocolate chip cookie that a bit of fudge on it. I took it and stared at it, then slowly lifted my head up and grinned.

I ripped open my second bag and searched around the bag with my hand, then pulled out something that looked exactly the same, bit of fudge and all. We jumped up and sang, "We're goin' to the factory!"
