Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
Maybe someday you'll look up
And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one:
"Isn't something missing?"
'How dare he just leave me,' thought a girl. Her heart hammered in her chest, feeling as though it would explode. Moonlight washed over her yellow-clad form as she ran down the dark and deserted corridors of the Southern Air Temple, her footsteps echoing off the bare stone walls, looking more forbidding than ever. She had to find him, she had to bring him home.
You won't cry for my absence, I know
You forgot me long ago
Am I that unimportant?
Am I so insignificant?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?
'How dare they just send me away,' thought a boy. He clambered with all his earthly possessions aboard his companion, heart pounding angrily… and fearfully, as he looked back to the moon washed temple. Nobody was there. Nobody would try to call him back. Nobody would know that he had gone missing.
Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't someone missing me?
The girl emerged into the open, only just in time to see the bison lift into the air and away. She cried out the boy's name, running even faster, desperate, fearful. The rain started to fall and she slipped, crashing to the ground. As she raised her head again, tears streamed down her face and she stretched a hand out, as if she could catch him and bring him back. But he was fast disappearing into the mist and rain.
Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
I know what you do to yourself
I breathe deep and cry out
"Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?"
The boy looked back as he heard his name ringing through the night. He felt the rain hit him like her tears, watched her fall and reach out to him. He reached back, as if he could take her with him and everything could be okay, everything could go back to normal. He never thought anyone would know he was gone this quickly. How could he have thought that she would not know?
Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't someone missing me?
The wind picked up, the drizzle turning to a storm, blowing the loose clothing of the two airbenders, the girl's voice lost in the wind's agonized howl. She pulled her hands back, resting them folded over her heart. Did she only imagine him reaching back for her? She touched the golden necklace at her throat, and felt her hot tears mix with the freezing rain. And she knew she could not call him back.
And if I bleed, I'll bleed
Knowing you don't care
And if I sleep just to dream of you
I'll wake without you there
Isn't something missing?
Isn't something...
He felt the wind ruffle his clothing, the fur of his steed, and saw her pull her hands back. Now he felt warm tears slide down his cheeks too. Soon the storm had swallowed her in its choking grasp, the soft yellow of her clothes and her soft voice easily lost. But he stared after her long after she had disappeared from view.
Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?
Even as they might hope, both the boy and the girl knew they would never see each other again. The next morning, the Avatar was reported missing.
