He wasn't evil. Not really. Most people thought he was because he was intelligent and sly and would stop at (practically) nothing to get what he wanted. But he was a very passive man, who stuck by his morals and took care of the ones he claimed as his own. It was only for the sake of his children that he began his campaign against allowing Muggle-borns into Hogwarts. He didn't want to risk any trouble with the Muggles who would never be able to understand. He wouldn't—couldn't—stand for the ignorance. He had to leave his home. Forever.
