Diclaimer: It's all JK's.
A/N: As it turns out, I'm currently obsessed with R&L fics and bored out of my mind. This is the result:
Moon Child
He is a child of the moon.
He is soft spoken and humble, yet craves adventure. He is a dreamer, companion, marauder. Some might even say he is a hero. But even heroes have their secrets. Secrets locked away in dark spaces, intangible and to be trusted with no one. Secrets that bottle deep inside threatening to break free and ruin you. Mostly, that steal away the only things that have ever mattered in your life.
He is a child of the moon.
In her eyes all she sees is beauty; deep beauty behind a deeper mystery. Curiosity a burning desire. She can have anyone. She can have anyone, but she only wants him. When she approaches he is always with friends. When he is alone he is like a phantom of a surreal world; not speaking only dreaming. Only wishing, perhaps, that things were different. That life were easy and the road of struggles less frequent. But wishes, he has learned early on, will always fail you.
He stares intently at blazing flames, eyes fixated, mind anticipating. The moon is threatening again. He can feel it parting through dark clouds, soon to be full, to cast its wretched light on his wretched world. Moon child feels it in his body, his bones, agony and fright. He knows his friends will be waiting for him by now, so despite himself, he numbly makes his way over to the portrait hole.
He is a child of the moon.
His body ails him, and so she catches him completely off guard when she enters the common room, face beaming like an angel of night, eyes vibrant with levity. Those eyes of hers, they melt his heart without fail.
Oh---evening, Lupin.
Evans, he nods politely, and makes for the exit, nearly forgetting his goal. Her eyes have a way of doing that to him. Tonight they seem to be speaking to him. They are intent, determined as they study his face deeply. Can she see right through me? Can she read my mind, he wonders as he tries to break free of her spell.
He takes a step back. She takes a step closer, all the while her eyes never leave his. They are yearning.
It's a nice night, Remus, she says finally, breaking the silence. Would you like to take a walk with me? Something inside of moon child seems to awaken. Not for the first time, the awareness of having to turn her down. Having to crush her, to break her.
I—I can't right now, Evans, I'm—
Right,a whisper, and he notices the delicate tears beginning to form in those beautiful, entrancing eyes. It's always an excuse, isn't it Lupin? It's always something.
Evans---wait---- She deserves to know. But still, how could he make her understand? She never would. And yet, the moment the tears begin to flow, his heart screams with some mad passion, some reckless desire to kiss her.
You'll hurt her, is all he can think, and he knows this is true.
You are a beast, he thinks. You are undeserving of beauty. His insides shake, his head spins. He walks straight through the portrait hole and into, yet again, just one huge part of his reality. Into the moonlight where he will become what she can never see, will never except. He walks on and he doesn't turn back, because if he looks into those eyes, he will ruin her life too.
He is a child of themoon. She is a heart waiting to be broken. Or maybe it already has.
A/N: So I know it wasn't all that good, but please review! I'm a newbie to the fanfiction world, so every review I get brings me closer to improvement.
