chapter 1
The two girls scrambled hastily over the wall, five men with spears and armor chasing them close behind. Rayadidnt need to stop and satre, she knew they were sent fromt eh fire nation. Suddenly littler girl tripped as the soldiers began to cross the wall.
"Mala!" The older girl screamed when she realized her sister was not behind her. Raya rushed to help the tiny girl, her red-brown hair now covered in dirt. Mala began to scream louder as the pursuers came closer. Her leg had only just been released from the tangle of branches when a foreign hand grasped the brown folds of her tunic.
"Raya! Raya!" the child screamed louder than ever, her hand frantically reaching for her sister.
Raya pulled as hard as she could to break her sister free of the soldiers grasp, but he was much stronger than her. In a split second she realized she could not win. This is the end,she thought. I will lose everything I love.
Suddenly the earth around her began to rumble, and pieces of ruble and dirt went flying towards the sky. A huge block of earth, carrying two soldiers went careening into the air, landing 20 feet away. In a rush of shock and rage, Raya lifted her trembling sister from the ground and sprinted off toward the forest.
A new found energy possessed Raya, her 7 year old sibling held to her back, she made her way closer to the trees.
Raya began to think, What happened to me? Did the earth move because of me?
Before she had time for a second thought, Raya heard once again, a terrifying noise; armor.
The clinking sound of metal shin-plates, and spiked helmets was coming from within the forest.
Like a trapped animal, Raya stopped, close to hysterics, she had to not only to protect herself, but her half-conscious sister. She whirled around to find an escape and to her horror she saw the original group of soldiers in the near distance. There were nearly 10 soldiers in the forest battalion their black/red armor glinted through the trees. One of them spotted the two girls, and signaled to his leader.
Suddenly adrenalin kicked in, and Raya ran with all her strength to the left of the forest.
But the soldiers were faster. Even as she pushed herself to run faster than she ever had, the horrifying thumps of thick boots and clanging swords grew louder and before she could think, two men were on top of her, tearing her form her sister. Now both girls were screaming and reaching for each other. The first group of men closed in behind
Tears streaming down her sunburned cheeks, Raya watched as soldiers carried away her sister, her darling Mala. She shrieked for her, her body shaking. Raya's captor tightened his grip and she watched her sister slowly become a black speck on the horizon.
