Scarlet opened her purse, retrieving her keys to unlock the door. Finally finding the right key she opened the door. Only to be greeted with a screaming girl running towards her and latching onto her leg.
"Mommy." Grace yelled out. Squeezing her mother's leg even harder.
"Oh, hello my big girl." Scarlet said. Detaching Grace from her leg and picking her up.
"Grammy and I made brownies today." Grace said proudly with a huge smile that was famous in their neighborhood.
"Really now." Scarlet said, giving Grace a smile in return.
"Yeah! It was really fun." Grace said, talking as most five year olds do. "Can Auntie Haley come over and try them, please, please, please?" Grace said giving her mom the puppy dog eyes.
"Of course Aunt Haley can come over. That is if she doesn't have plans." Scarlet said, gently setting the young girl down.
"Yay!" Grace shouted, throwing her hands up in the air, and running into the kitchen. Where Scarlet followed her.
"Hello mom." Scarlet said, as she saw her mother standing with an excited Grace jumping up and down near her.
"Hello Scarlet, honey." Her mother said in reply, moving to take a tray out of the oven. "The last batch is done Grace." She said smiling, setting the tray down on the counter to let it cool.
"Yay! I'm a chef." Grace said, pointing a small thumb at her chest.
"Yes you are. You are the most adorable chef in the world." Scarlet said, picking Grace up and spinning her. Making Grace laugh hysterically.
"So Grace tells me Haley's coming over." Scarlet's mom said removing the brownies from the pan.
"Only if she doesn't have plans." Scarlet replied, moving Grace to rest on her hip.
"She probably has a lot of time now that, that Macon guy moved to Texas." Her mom replied.
"Yeah. Good riddance." Scarlet sneered.
"Scarlet that's no way to talk about people." Her mother said in an adult voice.
Ever since Grace was born her mom had started acting more responsible. Actually like a mom should act.
"Mom! He was a jerk and almost killed Haley that one time, remember." Scarlet argued. "I can't believe she got back together with him after that."
"Well he did apologize, and she didn't get back together with him until a year after the accident. Really Scarlet people can change you know." Her mother argued back.
"Trust me mo he did not change." Scarlet said.
"Well at least she met that new guy, um, Jarred is it."
"Yeah. He's a major improvement over Macon, and Haley's crazy about him."
"Then you should be happy for her."
"I am. It's just she's only been dating this guy for a year, and I think she's going a little fast.
Her mother just sighed and continued to remove the brownies. When suddenly after a moment of silence, the door bell rang, piercing the silent room, and nearly scarring Scarlet to death.
Scarlet walked to the front door, pulling it open. Only to find Haley standing on the front porch, a huge smile spread across her face. And before Scarlet could say a word Haley jumped up and screamed.
"Ah! Scarlet, I'm engaged!"
