Chapter 3
"Do you remember the night that Alicia called you on your cell phone saying that she was having major trouble with her car?" Chloe looked right into Clark's eyes.
Clark looked at Chloe puzzled. What did this have to do with yesterday? Frowning, Clark said, "Yes."
Chloe took another deep breath and bite on her lower lip. Clark noticed her nervousness. She looked as reluctant as he had been to have this conversation. His gaze shifted from her mouth to her clear blue gaze. As he looked into her eyes, Chloe saw the questions there. "Well….when she made that phone call, I was in the car with her." Clark's frown deepened. Chloe could see he was trying to piece it all together. Clark quickly glanced up into Chloe's eyes again as thoughts began to come together. He was slightly shaking his head in disbelief. "Clark, she teleported us both out of the car and I watched you catch the car in mid-air and then gently put it down. I, then saw you speed off."
Chloe paused to let what she had just told Clark to sink in. Clark's mouth had fallen open in shock. He looked like he wanted to say something, but couldn't. Chloe leaned over close to him and put her hand on his cheek. "Clark, are you okay?" He still didn't respond, he just looked at her. "Clark, talk to me."
Clark rose from the couch and walked over to the window. "Alicia said that she would always keep my secret. I can't believe that she told you. Why?"
Chloe rose from the couch and walked over to where Clark stood. She placed her hand on his arm and pulled to get him to turn around and face her. "Clark, I don't know why Alicia did what she did, but I am glad that I can share this with you. Please, don't shut me out. Talk to me." When Clark looked into Chloe's eyes, she could see the unshed tears. "Oh Clark." Chloe wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder. "I'm so sorry."
Clark took a shaky breath and brought his arms up around Chloe and just held her. It felt so good to just hold her. His best friend. She knew about some of his powers, but knowing Chloe, she would think he was a meteor freak. She didn't seem to mind that, but how would she feel about him if she told him he was really an alien from another planet? That he was the cause of the meteor shower that killed Lana's parents and made mutants out of so many people. He felt responsible for ruining so many lives. He wasn't sure he wanted to take the chance. Not just for his own selfish reason of losing her as his best friend, but for her own safety. If anyone ever found out what she knew about him, she would always be in danger and he couldn't live with himself if anyone ever hurt her.
Suddenly Clark realized that Chloe had to know more than she was saying. What she just told him had nothing to do with the past 24 hours that he was missing. What happened to make her feel like he trusted her? He had to find out what she knew. "Chloe?" Clark brought his hands up to her arms and pulled her slightly away from him. Chloe looked up at Clark with tears rolling down her cheeks. "Hey, it's okay." He reached up and caught one of the tears that clung to her lashes. "Don't cry."
Chloe sniffled. "I can't help it. I can't stand to see you this upset."
Clark smiled and looked into Chloe's eyes. "I'll be okay." When she looked at him doubtfully, he assured her, "Really." Clark brought her back to his chest and gave her a squeeze, resting his face on top of her head. "Let's go finish that talk, okay?" He whispered into her hair. He felt Chloe nod. Clark let her go and watched her walk over to the couch wiping her tears as she went. She sat down and looked up at him expectantly. He smiled and moved over to the couch to sit. Turning to face her, Clark relaxed a little. This was Chloe, his best friend. He would just go with the flow here and see what she knew. "What happened yesterday?" Clark looked deep into Chloe's eyes.
She softly whispered, "You trusted me." Clark raised his eyebrows, but didn't lose eye contact with Chloe. There were those three words again.
