I'VE SEEN THAT LOOK BEFORE
DISCLAIMER
Supernatural belongs to the WB. I own nothing. Takes place at the end of the pilot. I've added a line that was in the closed caption, but wasn't said. This is Dean's POV.
"You'll call me if you find him? Maybe I can meet up with you later, huh?" Sammy asked me.
"Yeah, all right," I agreed. He tapped on the Impala twice. I twisted the key in the ignition and the engine turned. "Sam," I called. He turned. "You know, we made a hell of a team back there," I told him.
"Yeah," he agreed. I turned back to the car and drove away. I had only gone a few feet, when I felt my big brother instincts tell me to turn around. I tried to ignore it. I mean, come on. It was Sammy. He was a big boy. He could take care of himself. I looked in the review mirror.
"What the---" I furrowed my brows when I saw whisps of flame. Then, I heard a distant shout. Even from here, I realized it was Sam. I quickly turned the car and and headed back for the college. I parked, but didn't even bother to cut the engine, and raced inside.
"Sam!" I called. From the hall, I heard him cry his girlfriend's name. I stopped inside the doorway. "Sam! Sam!" I shouted again. Sammy screamed and writhed on the bed. For a moment, I stared. What was wrong? Then, my gaze turned to the ceiling. There was his girlfriend, pinned and bleeding from her stomach. I looked at her in horror. No. Not again, I thought fearfully. It was just like Mom.
"No! No!" Sammy yelled. That drove me action.
"We gotta get outta here," I said, running into his room. I yanked him away from the bed.
"Jess! Jess no!" he screamed, trying to run past me. But all I could hear was Dad's voice: "Take your brother outside as fast as you can, and don't look back! Now, Dean! Go!" Later on, as what seemed to be every seemed to be every student at Stanford gathered around the police cars to stare at the ruined aparment, I turned to Sammy who was at the Impala. I heard him cock one of the rifles and walked up to him. I looked at Sammy, silently asking if he was okay. What I saw broke my heart. That look. I've seen that look before. Pain, sadness...but what really killed me was that the light that had made Sammy's eyes shine was gone. He now looked dead, defeated. Just like Dad after Mom was murdered by this thing. This creature, whatever it was, had stolen Sammy's light and I didn't know how to bring it back. He sighed sadly. He cocked rifle one last time and then tossed it into the back of my car.
"We got work to do," he stated. Then, he slammed the the trunk.
