Broken.

Summary: "If I don't come back, will you cry for me?" The first war took it's toll on many, especially, it seems, on the young and in love. (J/L) One Shot.

Disclaimer: I love Harry Potter but that does not make him mine; but if someone could arrange for James to become a reality…..he's MINE. :D

James looked at Lily. Her pale white face, the scattering of freckles across her nose, her eyes; most of all he looked at her eyes. Their vivid green now seemed no less vibrant, no less passionate than they had the day they met, the day they first kissed, the day of their wedding, yet somehow they portrayed a longing, a sense of hopelessness he had only seen once before. "Come back to me" they whispered.

James looked at Lily and clasped her hands, feeling the slight callous on her right hand where she held her wand, the scar he had given her the first time they had met and her wedding band. She was his forever.

As long as he came back.

"If I don't come back," he whispered to her, his face painfully close to hers, his eyes intense, "If I don't come back, will you cry for me?"

Lily grasped his hands tighter, pulled a little nearer, she did not say the clichéd lines from novels, she did not plead for him to come back to her, did not refuse the possibility of his defeat. Lily knew as well as James that life cared nothing for promises, cared nothing for love. Fate cared only for vengeance, and only it knew what for.

"Will you?" He whispered again, his voice breaking slightly

"No." He turned away from her, scooping up the light pack which had been resting on the bed. Their bed.

"No?" He questioned softly as he neared the door, not turning to look at her.

"No." Lily repeated, a single cool tear running down her cheek, passing those beloved freckles and escaping past her green eyes, James took one step forward and so he nearly didn't hear her next words "I'd be too broken."

A/N: Quick one shot. Meh. I have to say I a quite proud of it. Even if it is hopelessly romantic – thought it is angst-y, me like angst.

R&R to make my day, or I'll find a way to make you pay.

You think I'm joking.
