Chapter 1, Loss

'Why! Why has this happened…? Kami, what did I do to deserve this? Koibito, why did you leave me…? I thought… I thought you loved me… Why would you leave me now…?'

Tears streamed from the once-brilliant green eyes of Kurama, his head in his hands. The swollen green orbs were dull and filled with despair. His long red hair had lost its sheen, hanging limply around his face. The untamed, lank hair hung in his face, coming down to rest on the stark-white sheets of the bed he kneeled beside.

The man looked at the cold, pale form lying in the bed before him. The sight brought fresh tears to his eyes. The salty liquid collected on his long eyelashes before spilling down his face. Hoping against all odds that this was nothing more than a horrible, cruel nightmare, one that he would soon wake from, the fox grabbed the clammy hand of the man in the bed.

"No… You can't really be gone… Not now, not after all we've been through…" sobbed Kurama desperately.

On the verge of going completely insane, Kurama wrapped his arms around the cold body in front of him. He hugged the limp form, sobbing and crying hysterically.

Desperate for things to be back to the way they were not but 3 days ago, the fox buried his face in the hair of his former lover. He wanted the smell of his lover to fill his senses, as it had all those nights they'd spent curled up together in bed. His was greeted with the stinging scent of disinfectant.

'I've always hated hospitals…' thought Kurama dryly, sobbing even harder. He stroked a pale cheek softly.

"No… NO! You're not really gone… Hiei, please, wake up. Please…"

Kurama wanted so very badly for the small fire demon to sit up and glare at him with his piercing red eyes. He wanted Hiei to cross his arms and say: "Hn. I haven't gone anywhere, fox. Now, will you let go of me?" Anything, if it meant that the demon he loved so much wasn't really lying here in his deathbed.

When no reaction came, Kurama gripped the demon for dear life, whispering, "No… Please, Kami, no… Bring him back to me… I'll do anything… I need him…"

Kurama stayed this way for many hours, before kind hands gently pried him away.

"NO! He's not gone! He will wake up! I know it! No…….. GODDAMMIT, NO! YOU CAN'T TAKE HIM AWAY! He's going to wake up… I know he will…" screamed Kurama frantically as people he had never seen before came and took away the small, lifeless body of his lover.

Kurama broke free of the arms holding him back. He stumbled forward, his vision blurred by tears.

"No… don't take him away… from me… Please…" whispered Kurama, before passing out from exhaustion.

Strong arms lifted him and carried him away in the opposite direction, away from the one he loved.

Throughout this whole ordeal, cold blue eyes, full of jealousy, watched the fox from afar, wanting to comfort him, but powerless to do so…
