Disclaimer: I don't own SKY HIGH

My Very Own Fairytale

Warren Peace had been running late to lunch. Now he was even later and staring at the most attractive girl he'd ever seen in this god forsaken school. What was it Romeo said after he saw Juliet? Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night. His hand automatically went to help the beauty on the floor who just waved it away and said, "I'm fine. Don't worry." Those four words brought Warren back to reality, what the fuck? Did I justno. No I didn't.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts and then said gruffly, "Sorry about that." He picked her backpack up for her before she had a chance to and shoved it into her hands.

"No–" the guy walked away quickly, "–problem." After he turned the corner she shifted her bag onto her other shoulder and checked her pocket to make sure her lighter was still there, when she found it she let out a breathe she didn't know she was holding. She took a quick look down the deserted hall before following the way the guy went and ended up at the cafeteria finally.

Gabby stood awkwardly at the door of the cafeteria feeling vulnerable as her gaze swept the room. It landed on Layla who was waving wildly from the back while Maj sunk down trying to pretend she didn't know her. Gabby laughed out loud and walked towards the table, "Hey girls, where's everyone else?"

"The guys are getting food," then Maj rolled her eyes. "Dunno how they can stand the cafeteria food though," and Layla nodded in agreement. Soon though the two girls interrogated her about her first half-a-day at Sky High and Gabby filled her in on the highlights. Sadly enough this only included the mysterious person she ran into and the freshman in power placement who almost blew Coach Boomer out the window.

"Hello ladies!" Zach greeted as the rest of the group sat down, he grinned at everyone and gave an exaggerated wink to Gabby who just giggled and mock-blushed, she figured he was doing it just to make Maj jealous and who was she to stop the cycle of their on and off again relationship?

"Hey Gabby," Will said.

Ethan turned to her and handed her a pudding, "Here, chocolate pudding for surviving half a day at Sky High without getting roasted, frozen, drowned, or bullied." Gabby thanked him, giggling a little bit, before noticing the last guy at the end of the table, now he looks very familiar…oh my lordies! It's the hot guy that ran me over! Now that she was able to study him without him noticing she saw a lot of things she didn't notice before. His leather jacket sat on his broad soldiers quite well but the loose black band shirt he wore didn't do him justice, neither did the fact that his long brown-black hair (with two dyed red streaks) covered his face almost 99 of the time. Gabby frowned as she noticed this, how am I supposed to gawk at this guy if he covers that awesome face of his with his hair all the time?

She must've been staring into space, or just at the guy, because the next thing she knew Maj kicked her under the table and her head spun around to look at her furiously, "Ouch what was that–" and then she saw the other occupants of the table staring at her… staring at him. Oh man! I hope he didn't notice, she shot him a glance and even though he tried to hide it at the last second she saw the smirk and knew he saw. Argh.

Ethan waved a hand in front of her face, "You okay? Looks like you spaced out for a while." Gabby just nodded deciding not to do anything else until the bell rang again in case she decided to do anything stupid.

"Yeah you were like staring-staring. Without blinking! It was creepy." Zach added as an after thought and for the second time that day Gabby rolled her green eyes heavenward. Then she brushed her coal black hair out of her eyes and tried to make up an excuse before they caught on to what she was really doing.

Layla and Will however were already exchanging amused looks. "Well since you seem so interested Gabby, this is–"

"–the guy who hit and run."

Everyone blinked at her, confused (sans Maj, Layla, and Warren who knew what she was talking about). Layla just giggled though at her interruption and said, "Yeah. But around here he's also known as Warren Peace." Gabby nodded, recognizing the name from this morning before turning back to her pudding trying to keep herself busy so she wouldn't have to meet the gazes of other people.

"You might need a spoon," Warren slowly said.

Gabby gave him a half-nod before changing her mind, "I'll just ah, save it for later I guess. I'm not really hungry." And she stuffed it into her backpack before turning back to the conversation she was having with Maj, she was telling her about how exciting their freshman year was (well, up until homecoming) and Gabby was listening intently; trying to learn as much as she could about her new friends. She was surprised when she heard about Warren going with Layla to the homecoming – in a tux! – to help her get set up with Will, she was even more surprised when she heard about how they went from bitter archrivals to the best friends they are today.

"Well if that doesn't sound like a Disney movie I don't know what does," Gabby finally said when the story was finished. "You should sell it, you'd probably make millions."

Zach looked like he was seriously pondering the idea but Maj just laughed, knowing it was just a joke.

When the lunch bell finally rang Gabby groaned and waved goodbye to the group ("Only 21 more freshman to go!") before heading off to the gym again.

Indeed it was almost twenty-one freshman before it was time to go, there so many freshman that it was now two minutes till the bell rang and there was still three more freshman to go before her. She saw the group from lunch come in to wait for her – this included Warren – and she started to get more nervous about stepping on the platform in front of everyone and having a car dropped on her. This is what happens, I think too much. So then I overanalyze situations and I get nervous and now look at me! She was currently lounging with the other waiting freshman on the opposite side of the gym from her friends flicking her lighter open and close, open and close, open and close, open and close. Before finally she flicked it shut, heaved a long sigh, and looked over to see what the rest of the group was doing.

Warren was spread out taking up three of the large steps that made up the bleachers and reading a book, Ethan and Zach were currently making faces at her so she would giggle (and she did), Maj was practically falling asleep, and Will & Layla were making goo-goo eyes with each other. When Ethan and Zach lost interest in making total idiots out of themselves to make her laugh they began to talk to each other rapidly about something she couldn't hear so she sighed again and started to flick her lighter open and closed again.

"GABRIELLA ROSEMONT!"

Oh my god, FINALLY! She screamed in her head–

"Are you saying that I'm slow?"

– or so she thought. She looked across the way to see most of the group laughing and even Warren trying to fight a smile. Oh god, that's twice in one day I've embarrassed myself. Then she walked quickly up to the stage avoiding eye contact with anyone else except the idiotic man who kept trying to make her go deaf.

"What are your powers Rosemont?" Last name means he doesn't like me, oh that's just great. It's not like I meant it to come out of my mouth…

"I'm telekinetic, I can make things move," she said, deciding that she'd mention the other power only if she needed to.

"And?"

Okay maybe she needed to now, nosy little bastard, "and I can control & mutate the elements."

"So could you show us a DEMONSTRATION!" He yelled the last part, oh for the love of ALL THINGS HOLY! IF I GO DEAF I AM BURNING THIS MAN ON FIRE, DROWNING HIM, ATTACKING HIM WITH POISON IVY, AND AND– "Anyday now Rosemont."

She growled, already in a bad mood and then smirked, "Okay." The next thing everyone else heard were the screams and cursing of Coach Boomer as he was flown around the room.

Everyone was still cracking up after they left the gym that day (Coach Boomer had pronounced her a 'sidekick' and held on to that label even after almost all the freshmen and her friends protested since they loved what she did to the evil dictator). Will, Zach, and Ethan all congratulated her on making sidekick in the best way possible while Layla, Maj, and her would burst into giggles every so often when they remembered what happened. Even Warren gave her an approving grin that made the butterflies in her stomach go wild so she had to turn away so he couldn't see her blush.

Luckily for everyone Will always carried Ron Wilson's card in his bag so soon everyone was piling into the empty bus, thanking Ron, and talking about what Gabby did in the gym. Gabby took the seat next to Warren who just rose on eyebrow at her then looked out the window. In front of her sat Will and Layla and to her left was Maj & Ethan with Zach in front of them. The whole way home they replayed the scene in the gym detail by detail and then they talked about how Will's parents could probably get him to switch the classes from sidekick to hero if she wanted but she declined. "I'd make a lousy hero, too much responsibility for me."

Everyone told her how things used to be worse for sidekicks in their freshman year and how even though they still had the power placement the whole labels thing didn't really separate the school as much as it did before.

"It's amazing that the principal didn't think to stop that before," Gabby said in wonderment shaking her head. "They couldn't see that coming? Heroes putting down Sidekicks because they were made to think they were better? That's sad. I'm glad you guys changed that though." They all glowed with pride (Zach, literally).

First person to get off the stop was Ethan, then Maj, and then Zach. Gabby would have at least attempted to memorize where their houses were but it was seriously no use since they all looked alike to her.

Will turned in his seat to look at the quiet pyro next to Gabby, "Hey Warren you got work today?" Warren shook his head no, "You wanna come over? We can work on homework and play video games for stuff like wrestling, you know manly stuff," he said it jokingly directed to Warren but Gabby overheard it and giggled anyway. Layla caught her eye and they both giggled together. Will then turned to the other two girls, "You two wanna come over too?" Layla automatically said yes but Gabby declined.

"I dunno if my mom will let me cause it's the first day of school and all, she's real excited about me going to her alma mater and will want to know every little detail even though I was only in the gym for the whole time she'll give me the twenty-one questions thing."

When Ron dropped them all off at the same time they waved goodbye and then walked down the silent street, Layla & Will in the front with Warren & Gabby following in the rear. The couple in front of them kept up a lively conversation while they were content with a companionable silence before Gabby broke it, "What's it like?" The question was directed to Warren who looked at her confused. "Fire, what's it like to be able to create and be protected against something that most people can't touch."

Warren looked at her weird, "Well it's not like you wouldn't know right?"

"I suppose I'd know what it's like to be able to touch the untouchable. But I don't know how it feels to be able to create it. I need a lighter to get my fire just like I'd need a glass of water to do anything with water. I can't conjure up the element, hence the question." She looked at him curiously.

"Well… it's like something that comes from the inside. When I power up it's the strongest when I'm having an intense emotion like anger or sadness, and when it happens it's like the fire is becoming centered in my body before it's let out, onto my arms or hands or wherever. It's awesome." Warren looked over at the smiling girl realizing she probably got him to talk more to her than he's had to anyone who wasn't Will or Layla.

"That's cool," she finally said looking away, flicking her lighter cap on and off again.

"Can I ask a question?"

"Besides that one," she smirked.

"Yeah, besides that one." She nodded to him, "Why do you do that?" He motioned towards fidgeting with the lighter.

"Oh, I do it when I'm nervous or just when I feel the need to fidget or move but can't. Sometimes it's just when I'm surrounded by normal people and I have a huge desire to just use my powers and can't, plus it's a present from my dad so it's super special," she concluded.

Warren was about to ask about her dad when she interrupted him, "This is my house, see you later guys! Bye Warren nice talking to you," and she walked briskly to the front door. Avoid the subject is all I've got to do and I won't break down or share too much information, she thought to herself as she shut the door behind her seeing the dark eyes of the pyro still on her front door.
